Jan 27, 2009 – Associated Press reports that Hawaii’s unemployment rate has hit 5.5 percent in December, the highest level in nearly a decade.

Labor officials announced Monday that Hawaii lost 7,700 jobs, as the seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose from 5 percent in November. A year ago, the rate was 3.1 percent.

December’s 5.5 percent is the highest since June 1999 when unemployment hit 5.8 percent.

Still, Hawaii was doing better than most of the nation. The national unemployment rate last month was 7.2 percent, up from 6.8 percent in November.
