Information to have before you call

If you are looking to file a claim for Michigan unemployment benefits, you will need to gather a few things before calling the unemployment office.

For your initial application, you will need:

  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Driver’s License or State ID
  • Full legal name
  • Address
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth (DOB)

If you’re applying for the first time over the phone, you will also need 18 months of work history information including wages earned and employer information. Your wage information can be found on payroll forms like your W-2 or paycheck stubs.

Employer information includes the name of the business, address, and contact information. If you can locate the FEIN and EAN of these employers, that will speed up your application process. These numbers can be found on your W-2 in addition to your gross wages. You will also need to explain the reason for your termination or separation at each workplace.

If you are calling in to file your biweekly certification, you will need to report any earned income as well as your work search activities. For this reason and for resolving customer service issues, you will also need your Michigan Identification Number (MIN). This number is provided with all correspondence from the Michigan Department of Labor and Opportunity. This is the number you should use instead of your Social Security Number, for security reasons.

If you are going to use a phone for certification, you will need to also set up a PIN or Personal Identification Number. This 4 digit number cannot include identical digits or sequential numbers. If you forget or need to reset your pin, you can contact the unemployment office.

What is MARVIN?

MARVIN stands for Michigan’s Automated Response Voice Interactive Network. It allows you to file your certification over the phone. All you need to use MARVIN are your Social Security number and your PIN. You can call MARVIN toll free at 1-866-638-3993, Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

There are a few reasons why someone may not need to use MARVIN, such as being in an approved training or vocational rehabilitation program, claiming a flexible week, or being self employed and submitting a profit and loss statement. Contact the unemployment office at 1-866-500-0017 directly if these reasons apply to you, or if you are unsure of how to use MARVIN. Remember that you can also file benefits online using the MiWAM portal.

Schedule for Contacting MARVIN

The schedule for calling MARVIN is based on the last two digits of your Social Security number.

Michigan Unemployment Phone Numbers and Services

Unemployment Insurance Customer Service Line

Claimants of UI benefits can dial 1-866-500-0017, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Employers need to call a different number: 1-855-484-2636. Agents are available on this line Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

If you need someone who speaks Spanish, wait until you hear that option, in Spanish. If the operator determines you need a translator for a different language, they will connect you to one for further assistance. Hearing impaired individuals should access TTY services at 1-866-366-0004.

Scheduling a phone appointment

You can schedule an appointment online by filling out a request form. The date and time will be assigned to you, and it’s important to show up on time.

Fax Numbers

You can fax the unemployment office by sending documents to 517-636-0427. Fax appeals specifically to 616-356-0739. Be sure to include your name, MIN (Michigan Identification Number), signature, and date on everything you send.

Benefit Overpayments

For questions about a benefit overpayment (if applicable) contact the Benefit Overpayment Collection Unit by calling 1-866-500-0017. Hearing impaired customers who need TTY should call 1-866-366-0004. If you did not receive the correct amount of compensation, you can use the Michigan unemployment calculator to estimate your weekly benefit amount.

If your overpayment is potentially connected with a bankruptcy (and you can’t repay it), you may consider calling the Bankruptcy and FOC Unit at 1-866-500-0017. Note that TTY customers should call 1-866-366-0004.

Michigan Unemployment Office Locations

Sometimes, it’s nice to go to a nearby UIA office or MichiganWorks! Location to speak to someone in person about your Michigan unemployment benefits. There are a number of brick and mortar unemployment offices where you can get help finding work, and get help with your UI application or bi-weekly certification.

Your local unemployment insurance office can provide in-person help to file a claim. You must make an appointment before visiting between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. To be more precise, 20-minute appointments are scheduled Monday through Thursday between 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, and on Friday from the same opening time to 3:45 PM.

Telephones and computers are available for those without phone or internet access to file their initial application, access the Michigan unemployment calculator, submit their biweekly claim, and perform the required work search activities. There are a dozen unemployment offices around the state.

If you are visiting the unemployment office in person, be sure to have or know your Social Security Number (SSN), PIN for MARVIN, and Driver’s License (DL) or State ID number. If you’re not a U.S. Citizen, you will also need your Alien Registration Number and the expiration date of your work authorization. If you are representing someone collecting UI benefits, you must show proof of legal guardianship or Power of Attorney (POA).

Visit a UIA Office for help with your Michigan unemployment claim. By appointment only.

Some issues cannot be resolved with an in-person meeting alone, and will need additional verification or research from the unemployment office. These issues include pending payments, non-monetary related determinations of eligibility, additional claims, or overpayments. Also, note that the unemployment office does not manage the unemployment debit card – that is managed by U.S. Bank, and you will need to call the back of this ReliaCard.

MichiganWorks! Locations

For help with your job search and job search activities, you can also visit a Michigan Works Career Center. Meeting with MichiganWorks! staff in person or virtually is a requirement for collecting unemployment compensation. The staff will verify the job profile you create on the Pure Michigan Talent Connect website, which is another eligibility requirement.

MichiganWorks! staff members can help you search for jobs, build a resume, prepare for a job interview, and explore options for job training, continuing education, and vocational rehabilitation services. Both the unemployment office and Michigan Works encourage Michigan residents to schedule virtual appointments. Please do not visit an office in person if you are exhibiting cold or flu symptoms. Instead, please call one of the Michigan unemployment phone numbers.

You can get help looking for work and access a variety of job services at a MichiganWorks! location near you.

  1. This system is dog sh**. Whitmer should be disgusted with the state of affairs. No wonder so many people turn to crime in this state. The state isn’t there to help!!!!!!! Get off your boats and help the people.

  2. This system is absolutely awful. Nobody wants to help solve the problem. The site is a viscous circle. I needed to get only 3 weeks pay and it does not look like I will ever get it. There needs to be a training course on how to get your payment from Unemployment. I would like to see some of the executives to try and use this system. I am fortunate to now have found a job, but for those that really need the pay and cannot get out of the spinning wheel, I can feel their pain. I will go to an office next step. Maybe somebody will read this.

  3. I have certified for benfits never received not one dime I filed appeal I was told to watch it . I got sick talk to severl customers agents I never got any help . I got letters saying I would get benfits then got letters saying I couldn’t get it because of some reason I was in the appeal process I still didn’t get any help . I was unemploymed for years sent in tax forms as asked still got no help with getting unemployment .

  4. I have called so many times and can never reach anyone. I keep getting a notice that I owe back all UIA I’ve received, which is not true, I faxed all required forms and paper work but still nothing. It says I intentionally misrepresented myself, so not true, no answer to my questions, I even filed a payback wavier and no reply to that. Don’t you think you should get this fixed soon. I even contacted my state rep. I would really like this settled instead of receiving letters that I am not responding.

    • Dear Margaret R. French,
You have done everything right, so keep documenting your interactions with the Michigan Unemployment Office. This sounds like a case of one hand not knowing what the other is doing. What action are they asking you to take?

I would recommend simply calling once a week and documenting what happens. Does the call go through, do you speak with someone and if so, who, and so forth. That is all you can do as they are making normal communication impossible.

      Best,

      Jean

  5. I have been dealing with unemployment since May of this year. I’ve gotten let go of my job during the pandemic, but have absolutely paid my way into the system since then. I have been regularly certifying since I filed in May, and it’s August now and I’m waiting for 5 grand from the state. Each time I have reached out to the office, they have told me the same thing of “keep an eye on your account” regardless of what information I provided. I’ve been going back and forth with them, giving them more information to verify my identity and I still consistently get the same answer. I’m unable to get employment at this point due to a lack of reliable transportation, and was in need of the 5 grand to help me get back on my feet. I have emailed my state rep, and even made an appointment with my local unemployment office. This is an absolute disappointment to the people of Michigan, and no one is batting an eye.

  6. I have called and called, jumped though all their hoops. It has been close to 10 months, still no benefits. It all started because one person did not do her job correctly. Now my family is paying for it.
When you call or chat with someone, they are like robots, they dont listen and more so than not, they do not look at all the information they tell you what they think is right, then hang up on you. They have the money but will not release it and they surely do not care that a person gets there utility’s shut off, car repossessed, and kicked out of there home the minute covid lifted.
Its the same answer every time. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR ACCOUNT. There is no time frame of when they will release the funds.
I have even tried to contact the Governor’s office, No help there either. I was hung up on after holding for 90 plus minutes

    • I am glad to know I am not the only one going through this terrible experience!! I have had the exact experience. Very upsetting!

    • I have been waiting since April . Still in Adjudication process. :( I have recieved not a anything. I’m back to work , yet I need to get caught up. This is just so sad to see everyone go through this

    • Carlte,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

      • Jeff – You are not helpful at all. I like so many others deserve a timely resolution. My claim says “in progress” but it isn’t – no one is working on it otherwise I would have received some kind of response from all of the correspondence that I have sent…..I think we should go to Lansing to protest. Nothing is being done as I have already written Governor Whitmer (4 times), Senator Dayna Polehanky and State Rep. Philip Green – Alias no help! – They have all requested feedback about how f__ked up MI UIA is, but when you send it they dismiss you or just flat out don’t help at all…I was told from Green that I wasn’t in the right jurisdiction for him to help! Really?? Are you Fricking kidding me? I’m still a Michigan resident – taxpayer – voter but I’m so sick of being hung up on and the canned rhetoric that I receive when I do call. I’m just making a paper trail and documenting everything. Why aren’t the problem resolution offices ALL OPEN – Isn’t that what they do?? Problem Resolution – Pure Genious.

      • I work for DHL and we were laid off for two week but I can not get on line for anything in the world

        • Kenneth,

Please let us know the exact nature of the issue. Are you unable to access the website?

  7. I have been trying for seven months they are asking me to certify every two weeks I have two protests I cannot get a hold of anybody I have sent at least 20 messages to the unemployment website I have spoken to at least 10 people with no answers they’re saying I owe restitution money which I don’t because I was working and I sent them my paystub‘s now they want me to prove I’m working through a job search which they know I am working part time two days a week I don’t know where else to turn. They send me an email telling me I am qualified for benefits but then they don’t give me the benefits. There was fraudulent activity from my previous employer and I have proof I don’t know where else to turn I’ve been kicked out of the chat room several times and all the people do is tell me I have to wait I have to wait I have to wait it’s been seven months!!

  8. It’s been well over a month and I haven’t received any benefits. Going on six weeks now! I am still currently laid off. I even verified my identity by submitting a picture of myself holding my driver’s license and also a picture of my social security card. Nobody can seem to help me in any way! Or is unwilling. I’m so stressed right now. Still says “under review” after 5 weeks! Last year when the entire state shut down I had no issues. This is ridiculous! I am out of money and have a little girl to think about. Please help me!!

    • Tony, here dealing with the same problem. It’s been weeks since I submitted identity which they already had on file. Still nothing. Try contacting your state representative for help. I contacted them yesterday and I’m hoping to hear something this week.

    • Tony,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

      • Jeff,
Quit with the canned responses….No one is working on claims, or redeterminations, they are looking for fraud. YOUR not fooling anyone.

There is No reason for this kind of delay – Open up problem resolution offices so that people get their voices heard.

      • I am going through the same thing consider going in to a branch office near you .that iswhat i have to do contact the governors office it is a disgrace they would not have a job if it was not for us also contact the news

  9. The (Federal Government )gave the state of Michigan the money for our unemployment!!!!! WE THE PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT!!!!!! TO KNOW WHERE IT IS!!! THE I.R.S. is open. Why is the state not?
    ___________________________________
AND THEY WANT US TO GO BACK TO WORK!!!!!! ( I CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY GAS!)
MAYBE WE SHOULD QUIT PAYING TAXES!!
AND SEE HOW THEY LIKE IT……… I FEEL SO LET DOWN.!
    LET’S SEE… COVID or SUICIDE?

    • Hello, Are there any UIA open where we can get help? I have called May times and talked to May agent without my account be fixed. I have been waiting over a month for UIA to fix my account.

  10. I am at this point certain no agents exist that you can talk to. I am no longer receiving my benefits, despite 14 weeks remaining, no alerts, no ‘submit additional information’ forms, nothing I can do. I’ve sent a dozen messages the last few months with no indication any of them were seen, every time I try to chat all agents are busy, I call the help number and am told there’s a higher number of callers yet you aren’t put in line before being put in a loop where you’re sometimes told to make a phone appointment, and most damning of all there are no phone appointments available for any issue for the next year. It seems obvious at this point that if you have a problem, you’re screwed as there is no one to help.

  11. I have been trying since October to get unemployment and have had zero luck. I filed a claim online and it was declined because I did not qualify for “Covid related issues” I was not fired due to covid. I explained this to the lady I spoke with during a telephone appointment and she dropped by call. This has happened 3 times now. I went to the unemployment office where they are not allowing anyone inside. There is a sign stating they are taking virtual appointments and to call a number and they would call back with an appointment time. Ive left 3 messages and no one has returned my call. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I need help

  12. I haven’t been recieving money since the week 29 of september and UIA has not tried to help I’ve submitted my identification papers (birth certificate and driver’s license) and am still not verified MONTHS later I’ve chatted with these agents which were very rude one even hung up on me the second one was kind and told me to wait However I looked today and my claims were wiped. gone. and my account still unverified even after sending 4 messages to unemployment and trying my best with a phone line that doesnt work and emailing people that do not care its a crime and it’s wrong and fear legal action must be taken for justice of thousands.

    • I TOTALLY AGREE GENO,THEY ARE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING TO ME, I FILED IN SEPTEMBER 2021,IT IS NOW ALMOST FEBRUARY 2022,AND THEY HAVE NOT PAYED ME ONE PENNY OF MY BENEFITS. IF YOU CALL ,EITHER NO ONE ANSWERS OR THEY HAVE THE SCRIPTED LINE OF “JUST KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR ACCOUNT.” I CALLED ONCE AND SHE SAID SHE WOULD CALL ME THE NEXT MORNING TO HELP ME OUT,SHE NEVER DID,IT WAS JUST A RUSE TO GET ME OFF THE PHONE.LISTEN,WHAT DID YOU END UP DOING? DID YOU EVER COLLECT,DID YOU GET A LAWYER? PLEASE E-MAIL ME BACK,I’M INTERESTED,THANK YOU.

      • I have the same issue as well. My payments stopped in Oct. of 2021 over identity documentation. I have done legal research and it turns out that they have to resolve the issue within one week if you were already receiving payments or they have to continue paying until they figure it out. They are definitely breaking the law. I was considering legal action also but fear it will prolong the wait. I filed two protests, wrote letters in mail, wrote messages, faxed in letters, called, contacted the agency director, even the state representative and nothing. I also contacted a consumer investigator from the news station that did a report previously on the MI UI but no response with him either. I am out of options and have been told to keep waiting for two years almost. Has anyone contacted an attorney and if so what were they told?

    • Has anyone gone to the media about this issue? Someone needs to publicly stand up and demand Whitmer address and fix the utter failure of her state in ALL categories but especially unemployment benefits. MI has failed it’s people.

    • I have the same issue. What did you do? I am currently awaiting a phone call from an unemployment attorney. It has been many months for me as well. They refuse to let me speak to a manager or transfer me to the department that made the decisions on my ID papers. They cannot even tell me why my docs were denied. They were clear and the agents ive spoken to even admit so. Ive submitted my passport, photo ID, ss card and signed docs as well as pictures of me holding my passport open.

    • No one ever avaliable when i try to call online chat or send a message. I have money posted on my miwam account but not my checking and im trying to make sure i have the right account information

    • I agree! They owe me on a PUA claim for Endless Review delays! I recieved $193/ weekly then got bumped up to $262/ weekly. This was after and throughout 22 weeks of delays for “INELIGIBLE voluntary quit” a former employer.
Three times, I waited 22 weeks for them to realize I Was Self Employed & that’s my seperating employer!
3 days after they settled this same issue for the 3rd time, A New Review stated I was ineleible, they’re saying they payed me $393 weekly, on time, too and I owe them $19252

  13. Hi, I’ve been trying to get in contact with the office via email and so far no response and the 800 numbers line wait times are 2+ hours now and all I want to know is when and where my debit card not that I cant change my payment method and form 6347 (which was to be uploaded with my personal docs for identity verification) they claim to have mailed was sent to because I haven’t received either. Also I’m not sure why the form can’t just be uploaded to my MIWAM Acct with corresponding info so I can just give them the necessary info off of it that their asking in order to finish processing my claim before it closes out this week. #help

    • My form came the day after it was due. Hope that isn’t an issue, I had nothing to do with the mail. I did reach them, was informed, that was needed for my claim to be released, at that time I let them know I had not received it. Unfortunately nothing has been released. Wishing you luck!

      • I have been trying to visit the website all morning for an hour and a half and
cannot even get logged in. It goes to a new page so as to have to reapply?
Asking me to type all the info in once again.
        What next?
I am asking for my daughter who is with me. She is a freelancer with 2 gigs, one of which is telemarketing and the other is not.
how can we help her get the PUA She so desperately needs.
        Thank you

    • I have been trying to contact through email since February to have the issue resolved on my account. I am unable to certify for my additional 40 weeks of benifits remaining on my account, due to no link available. I have called the phone system which is a joke- it spins you around through the automated system then hangs up on you. I’ve tried to schedule a phone appointment online and there is never any appointments available. I’ve tried to talk to a person through their chat line and all that says is “no one is available to help at this time” kicks you off the server. I have sent in the requested information on multiple occasions. There is no possible way to get ahold of anyone, nor have I received a single email response to my countless messages over the months. I have given processing time and allotted time due to being backed up. However this just absurd at this point. No one responds and at this point I would wait however long it takes on hold if it meant I actually could speak to someone, however I am not even given that option at this point. “Just says that they are experiencing extremely high call volume at this time and to try your call again later”-and disconnects you!!

  15. I have 24 certifications all processed pending payment. Ive done the identity verification. Ive done the live chat. Ive talked to an agent. They tell me that a manager is reviewing my case. Child support is coming out of my claim but i myself am not being paid. Ive asked to speak to a supervisor or a manager and i have been told they are not allowed to do that. How do i go about actually fixing this because as i am looking for work i am goingbto lose everythinv.

    • I’ve got 14 weeks left of a 39 week pua claim, haven’t seen a nickel in 9 months damn near…. processed pending payment… no one has an answer but to just wait, I call them twice a week every week and my state rep as well, totally feel your pain! I’m at roughly 19k for what back pay they owe me… . Absolutely absurd

      • Really? Amicably? That’s what you say?!? Why isn’t there a REAL answer for this question. Thousands of people are about to go homeless and possibly lose everything and not a single person can really help the situation?!? Michigan unemployment, along with many other states, is a complete joke. The whole process needs to be fixed, starting at the top!

  16. I have paid into UE all my life. Now I need it and no answers or payments made. I will never work and pay taxes for UE ever again. What a fraud the government ran to take money and say its yours when you need it. lol. lmao. hahaha. whatever. I will not ever work for anyone but myself again. I will decide what taxes I pay and how much. And how does this help the system….it doesn’t! I will be making it worse by lying about income, but have no choice. I am only given the options available to me. Thank you for turning me into a criminal.

  17. I was furloughed for 2 weeks. One week in April and one in May. I was paid on time for April. I have yet to see my May claim processed. I have tried calling and online chat for 3 months. I cannot get through either one. I just sat here for 2 hours redialing the phone number and re-entering the chat info to get through. All agents are busy. I reopened my claim in June per the online instructions. I can see the submission. Now my account says closed. I tried filing another claim and it says I cannot back date my claim. I need to speak to someone. How in the world do I get through? My bill collectors don’t seem to care that I cannot get through to you to get my check. What am I supposed to do? I have a coworker in the same situation. He was off the same two months and never received his last payment. There is nothing online to explain what I need to do next. Do not send me to the website. I’ve been completely through it looking for an answer.

  18. I have tried calling for 4 days straight now, as my week ending 8/29 is hung up because I filed an additional claim that still has not been reviewed. I need a representative’s help, but am not getting any. I also never received the retroactive since 8/1, 8/8, and 8/15, which I do qualify for.

    Someone have any advice?

    • I just need to talk to someone.. I don’t know if I need more documents or what I need smh… Just a phone number to talk to someone.

      • Thomas,

Please try finding answers online since there might be limited phone support due to the shortage of staffing. You can use the “Resources” or “FAQs” section of the website.

        • Fayazah,

The Unemployment Office might be inundated with pending requests. Please visit the website to find the answers.

      • Hey Sam instead of answering everyone with the same thing for months when they are saying they can’t reach UIA, how about if you actually do some work and maybe instead of canned answers or telling people that everyone is busy helping someone else you actually do some work and help fix these problems. Calling and emailing UIA does no good, they don’t answer the phone or respond. How about you jump on the chat line? seems that would be a better use of your time. I have tried to reach someone for 30 days now and have sent multiple emails and no response so you responding to them to keep trying is not an answer.

        • I’m self-applied I haven’t received an appointment they denied me twice I have a learning disability I need help I need someone to help me with this and it’s been since last year March 8th whole year I haven’t had no money no stimulus check no nothing
And I just got married on the 25th so my last name’s hill now so white my email and username is different than what I’m putting right now I’m just changing it because I think someone is doing fraud or anything cuz they’re saying I’ve been unemployment of different state and I never have before my life and I need to do taxes I need help with that..

        • Stephanie,

I can understand your situation. The best way to get this resolved is by visiting an Unemployment Office in the vicinity with a family member/friend.

        • Sam
Do you know when the glitch in the system will be fixed? I have not received a payment since 9/2 and my March April May and June weeks have been in review since July. I called 2 weeks ago an agent said he sent my claim to his manager and I haven’t heard anything.

        • Terrance,

Unfortunately, I am as clueless as you. It’s not a glitch really. The Unemployment Office might be inundated with pending requests

      • The unemployment office is letting thousands of Michiganders down.
The website crashes, the phone line hangs up on you and every physical person has no information that can help give a timeline On payments. This is a true testament to the preparedness of the agency. It is an actual CRISIS and the UIA can not keep up. We should be holding these facilities to a higher standard to better prepare for the next Inevitable crisis. UIA IS LETTING THOUSANDS DOWN DAILY.
REDO THE SYSTEM. FIX WHAT IS BROKEN

        • I completely agree with you. I cannot get through to speak with a live agent at all and it won’t even give me an option to hold because I would. I have been waiting on my APPROVED payments all the way from March and have only received $320 the first week of August and they owe me so much back pay. I’m losing my home, my kids are hungry and having to eat Ramen noodles. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND ANYONE OWED BACK PAY SINCE MARCH SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF FIRST BECAUSE WE HAD NOTHING TO GET BY!! At least those of you that have received most of their weeks have had that crutch- we are becoming homeless and Llosa everything. If I could just get two payments a month at least that would cover my mortgage and utilities. Pray. And if anyone is also experiencing this scenario and can offer some hope- PLEASE email me at pudlik247@gmail.com God Bless

  19. The system is a failure! I am a disability advocate who has worked for MRS and MiWorks but retired now. I am working with 8 unemployed workers with disabilities … two have only received 4 weeks of payments since March 20… I have written, emailed and called over and over and no one knows much, I have received 3 different answers to the same question for the same question but no one really helps or solves the problem. The UIA 800 number basically tells you to go online, in UIA cases there is an opportunity to send email to UIA but in 12 weeks not one email question has been replied to.
I have people who have lost their cars, lost electricity and lost their apartments and no living in a friends garage. Those people deserve respect and deserve to have a UIA system which assists them when necessary. They have worked, one disabled guy 30 year of washing dishes and then unemployed in March… he has only gotten 4 weeks of unemployment… I realize there is a pandemic but the welfare office stayed open, gas stations stay open, groceries stayed open but the UIA “works from home” which is a joke, that may work for 50% of Michigan citizens but its failing thousands. Today we are told by UIA the back pay will be paid “some day, its a waiting game”… thats a response to workers who haven’t been paid for 10-12 weeks of unemployment…. the UIA system fail and the director should be fired..

    • I have applied for unemployment 3 times within 2 years, they promised to send packages 2 times, I never received 1 package. now I rely on my own hustle and odd jobs until I find a solid gig. as a matter of fact I make more now with odd jobs and by spring I will be able to start my own business so thanks for nothing… you all totally looked over me.

    • The director should be held accountable for these delays. The UIA should be judged on its response during a CRISIS, When people need it the most.

Unemployment has let down Michiganders in a time of need.

    • I need a to show proofs of UIA to DHS and I can’t get ahold of UIA to speak with them. I have tried calling and it never gives me the option to talk with anyone, I’ve tried messaging with no response back and the online chat is always unavailable. I am going to lose help with food if I can’t get through… this is getting ridiculous. I know they are trying hard but why can’t I get help!

      • Tara,

Have you tried logging in to your account online to see if there’s an option to upload the docs? You can also try emailing them to the office.

        • MICHIGAN HAS THE WORST UIA system in the country.they had serious issues before coronavirus. The news will say the unemployment rate is down, but that isnt true because you cant get through via phone or online
If you look at complaints about the UIA online most of the complaints are from Michigan.

  20. Claims have been certified and have state processed pending payment for over 2 months, but I have yet to be paid.
I’ve messaged, called, and the online chat feature isn’t ever available – and have yet to receive a response.
What am I supposed to do now?

    • Gabriela,

The Unemployment Office might be inundated with pending requests. Please visit the website to find the answers.

      • I have waited since May for my claim to be processed and now it says closed. Can’t get through to talk to anyone. There is NOTHING on the website on how to handle these things. I have tried calling non stop for the past 3 hours. All agents are busy. I tried filing a new claim and it won’t let me back date it. We all just need answers.

        • Cari,

This is a bad time for the entire nation. The Unemployment Office might be inundated with pending requests. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals

      • I am trying to sign up for unemployment I am having such a hard time I was there somebody that could help me I’m using my friend’s phone because my phone got stolen but if you could could you please get back with me 810 326-6968

  21. I have been waiting for 4 months, I have tried calling and emailing, I can’t get anywhere with unemployment. I got some of my unemployment beginning of May but now all of my payments are saying “stop payment indicator” for the last 4 months and now every time I certify my certification disappears after a day. I feel hopeless, there is no getting through to them.

    • Andrea,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

      • I have done 20 cerfications I was issued the last 5 certifactions but the others state processed pending payment .. I have succefully verified my identification. Numerous messages .. I’ve called numerous times just to say try back later I been waiting 3 n 1/2 months. What can I do?? HELP ME PLEASE

        • Bobby,

Please be patient. There might be a delay considering the number of pending applications. Please try calling during off-peak hours.

  22. For 8 weeks an issue it has said “Open non monetary Issue” for one week on a payment then it shows “Ability Ability” the issue was when the state put on the extra questions one said were you looking for part time work. and I said yes. Thinking it was asking would i take anything. But It turns out it was asking it I could only do part time work. I have emailed 8 + times to ex-plane ( with never a response ) I misunderstood the question and said I am fit and ready to work and got my doctor to fill out a form that was sent to me 6 weeks ago and uploaded to the unemployment office. Please do not give me we are overloaded , I have provided all asked for this should be a quick look at the docs and move on not a 8 week issue If you need something ask for it or at least respond to on of the emails

    • Gregory,

      • This message you are telling people are no help especially if you emailed and call and they don’t respond to NO ONES calls or emails

  23. I filed on 6/26. It has said Non-Monetary Issue every certification since then and that my status stays on IN PROCESS. It has been 2+ months with no income. What is the hold up?

    • Ji,

The Unemployment Office might be inundated with pending requests. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals

  24. I received a notice on my PUA claim that I owe a great amount in restitution. There was no explanation as to why. I filed an appeal over 2 weeks ago but have heard nothing back, and the notice says I may be taken to court if the balance is not paid by September 4th (which is coming up fast!!).

I’ve tried emailing, to no avail. The online chat lines say they’re too busy. And calling? HA it doesn’t matter if I call at 8 A.M. or 4 P.M., there are always “higher than average call volumes” so I cannot actually get through to anyone.

I’m at a loss as to what to do! I need to speak with someone about this but my daily attempts go unheard. I just need answers regarding WHY restitution was filed against me (I qualified for PUA during that time, and have been qualifying just fine after as well). I don’t understand, and I really need to speak with someone. Please help.

  25. I have sent messages via MiWam for an update of why 2 months of unemployment were denied. I also sent a protest letter to the Grand Rapids PO Box weeks ago. Is anyone available to give an update of my claim? I would like to know why my claim was denied for 8 weeks and approved for the other weeks with no explanation.

    • Lorrie,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

  26. Please I marked Yes to the wrong question and it denied both weeks. I just need to re certify for those two weeks. I have sent 3 messages in my miwam account and tried chat and calling. NOTHING IS WORKING. I just need to get this updated. I sent the email/messages a month ago.

    • Carolyn,

There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

  28. I need to talk to someone at the agency. I keep getting this, “Open Non-Monetary Issue” for the past 7 weeks. I’ve called my HR and they are not contesting anything. I resubmitted claims numerous times, but to no avail. I can’t call to find out the hold up. Please can someone help?
    Thanks

    • When I tried to file for unemployment on 7/25 I learned I’m the victim of identity theft. I have been going round and round with people on the phone and getting no where! What do I need to do to straighten this out? Everyone says be patient but it’s already been 2 weeks. And I have gotten nowhere with this. I can’t even make a mi wam account because the name on my social security number Doesn’t match mine! Help!

      • Abbie,

Please report this to the “Fraud Department” immediately. There will an exclusive link to it on the website.

    • Mark,

The file may be on hold due to the pending applications. Please call the Unemployment Office for more.

  29. I have done everything that i could possibly do, i tried faxing, mailing and emailing my documents, i visited the office but it was closed, i tried calling the toll free number over 200 times and i have now received a processed-pending payment for the two weeks before and for the next two weeks i have a stop payment indicator, what am i suppposed to do?

    • Tenzing,

There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

  30. I am a victim of religious discrimination and have recently been fired for my beliefs. I NEED to talk to an agent or supervisor but no one is answering phone calls or Live Chat attempts. I’ve sent multiple emails and not one has been replied to.

    • Alan,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay in processing your application/response due to the pendency. If they deny on irrelevant grounds, you can file an “appeal”.

  31. Received a stop payment on my unemployment benefits, however it was made in error.
My account was flagged due to the start of my college semester. It seems that full time enrollment voids eligibility for UI benefits. I am only enrolled part time.
I received a redetermination letter from UIA that explained that my account was flagged, however after review it was determined that my benefits should be unaffected.
Unfortunately my benefit payment was stopped, and I have been unable to reach anyone for help.
I am in dire need of the funds, as school bills are continuing to build on top of regular monthly payments. I am a manager of a restaurant, and as such an unable to return to work. Therefore I am completely devoid of finances and quickly begining to panic.

    PLEASE HELP

      • Terence,

I can understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.

    • Austin,

I can understand your situation. You have to get to touch with the Unemployment Office to resolve this. Please try calling during non-peak hours.

    • There are no people to answer any questions. Too many issues with the unemployment system. Waiting for answers to several questions as well.

      • I can’t get ahold of anyone to help for filling, Everytime I try to file something goes wrong. I need to talk to someone but NO ONE IS ANSWERING PNONES. I can’t even leave a message.

        • Krista,

Please try finding answers online since there might be limited phone support due to the shortage of staffing. You can use the “Resources” or “FAQs” section of the website.

  32. Someone please HELP ME! I became unemployment very early on in this whole ordeal (middle February) and was given a monetary determination on March 8, then answered a question(based on an answer that had already been provided) and received a redetermination of the exact same amount on March 9. That was over two months ago. Almost 9 weeks. During this time, I have had my MIWAM account access locked out and never once have I even logged in. Why? Because someone fraudulently tried to use my SSN to file a claim. Well when the lady cleared up that issue up, she didn’t remove the lock on my account. And now, that lovely woman is gone, vanished into the ether. But since that time, I have called the MARVIN number on my appointed days. At the end of the recording it tells me I hav e answered all the questions and that my answers have been recorded and that there are additional questions pending that I can answer in MIWAM the next business day. But I can’t log in to MIWAM, and no one answers my phone calls, faxes, emails, nothing. I just moved here and have gone through three whole months of living expenses and have literally not a penny to my name. Where do I turn?

    • Such a shame, all the money the state of Michigan take in that they won’t hire live people to answer the phone to help people. Why have a 866 500 0017 number when there is no one to talk to. Michigan unemployment agency sucks- no help! I need my money now!

    • When I submitted my claims for the 2week period on 6/8/2020, I got a response for fraud. I’ve sent UIA my identification of social security card, driver’s license and birth certificate on 3 different dates (5/27 thru miwam, 6/4 by fax showing it was sent and received fine and by responding to an alert on miwam on 6/5). I’ve gotten no responses. I just filed a new claim for 2 weeks this past Monday, 6/8. Now this fraud. I need some help I am Joseph Jones.

    • Dan,

I can understand your situation. All we can ask you to do is be patient and keep checking the account status at regular intervals.

      • My name is Sandra Siebert and I had a pua and they told me to file new claim to get reg unemployment. I did that and I certified but no money. I have not had a check since 6/20/2020. They email me to tellbme to open my pua to certify to get payment for missing weeks. The certification had money amounts. I have stop payment indicator now. I will have to certify again . I need help. I am getting hung up on many times with no one yo talk to.

        • Sandra,

Please act as suggested and wait for a response from the Unemployment Office. There will be an intermittent delay.

  33. I made a mistake on my claim by miss reading a question,I worked for a staffing firm last year, and was hired into the company they place me at. I put on working full time and gave them last day I worked for them before being transfer over to the company. Now I am not being paid and have spent 3 days on the phone to only be hung up on. I need help I have a child in the house.

    • Im out of work due to covid-19 i worked at nusing home im locked out my account and can’t get back ir no response im out of money what can i do please dont say call

      • Toya,

Unfortunately, you will have to try calling the Unemployment Office during non-peak hours or find answers to your question on the department’s website.

    • I’m trying to send important documents through my Email…I would like to know the Email to Michigan unemployment office to submit my papers..Thank you Mary Stewart

        • Please I marked Yes to the wrong question and it denied both weeks. I just need to re certify for those two weeks. I have sent 3 messages in my miwam account and tried chat and calling. NOTHING IS WORKING. I just need to get this updated. I sent the email/messages a month ago.

        • Jamarie,

Please check if you have an option to correct the info online. There will be an intermittent delay.

        • I submitted my identity information on the 3rd of june and it still says pending. I also faxed the information.

        • Shawn,

Please wait for an update from the office. There will be thousands of applications for the office to be processed. Make sure to check the status at regular intervals.

  34. My husband is laid off and we were filling online. His account got DISABLED. Now the only way he can do it is to call. We can not get to a person at all. We have called this morning 102x in 20 min. This is ridiculous. All we need is someone to really clear his online account so we can start over. Is these a phone number that we can call to task to a person that can do this for us. And not the 500 number?

    • Same here. I’ve been trying to get ahold of someone for 2 weeks. Can’t file because no body answers the phone. Every time I call I get disconnected right after I select english.

    • Darci,

Please wait for a couple of days for the authorities to change the system in line with the recent announcements.

  35. Need an access code to continue my claim. I have been calling the number provided for 3 days straight day and night and cannot get a live person. Being referred to the web sight is no help. Our local Unemployment office is closed due to virus so visiting it is not an option. How am I to continue with filing my claim when I cannot obtain an access code or speak to a representative.

      • I can not get the authorization code sent to my phone and whenever I call the number I get hung up on after selecting 1 for English. This is ridiculous.

      • Haven’t received my last check direct deposit as of Friday May 22 two weeks ago on the 10 th you tried two deposit my unemployment check twice so you reverses one of them Good. I did you receive a dollar amount of my certification said two-3 business day

  36. I need a access code in order to finish signing up online and the number it gives me to call is not working. I need a way to get ahold of someone so I can get an access code so I can finish signing up please!

    • Brandon,

There might not be anyone available to answer your call. Please try doing it again online at regular intervals.

      • Sam,
You cannot receive an access code online, you have to call. That is the problem. None of us can get an access code to continue our unemployment claim, yet no of us can get through on the phone to get an access code!!

  37. I just got laid off for about 3 weeks because of this virus. Every number I call for unemployment is always busy and I am unable to file mine online because it says my ssn or birthday are wrong. Now how do I file? I’m stuck.

  38. I dont know why all the numbers are not working for michigan but if thats the case they should at least have a online chat to talk to a representative, I’ve been waiting for 3 days to file a claim but cant because im missing information i can only get from a representative and the best help they have that works is leaving a comment this makes no sense.

    • The state of MI UIA is intentionally preventing citizens from filling for unemployment and the covid19 extension. They are disabling messaging and refusing calls. The extension order was clear. They are to simply add 6 weeks to benefit periods but they are saying in response that they are waiting for further guidance as they disable the contact functions on their website. What a major failure and those responsible will be held accountable.

  39. I am a honorably discharged Veteran (2013). I moved to Michigan. I filed for unemployment and looked for a job. As this was a first time for me, I made sure to do everything I was asked to do. I went to job interviews, applied… the whole deal. I collected a total of $2,172 in benefits. It was determined that I was missing some paperwork and my benefits were to be cancelled unless I could bring in some paperwork (it was in the middle of a snowstorm and I am from the south… this wasn’t happening)… so my benefits were cancelled. I wasn’t able to find a job, because there were not many job prospects and I didn’t have very many job skills outside of the military.
Now, I received a letter (11 March 2020) stating that I owe all of those benefits PLUS an additional $1,086 in interest. I moved to Texas to work because I couldn’t find a job in Michigan. I have been a teacher since the end of 2014. I am not sure why they are wanting these benefits back, I mean I guess I could pay them back if Michigan was so desperate that they needed that money back… but I can’t get a hold of anyone to ask any questions to. I tried to log into my old account, but I need an access code, which I have to talk to someone to get, but I can’t get an actual person on the phone. What i can’t afford at this point is my already tiny paycheck garnished, so I am honestly trying to take care of this, but no one is making this easy.

    • I cant finish my claim and cant get through. This is ridiculous. I have no one to help me.. very very very bad service

    • Laura,

I can understand your situation. You can ask for an adjudicator to file an “Appeal”. Please note reaching out to the authorities may be an issue due to limited/no staffing (COVID-19).

  40. I was the Power of Attorney for a friend dying of lung cancer, when he went into the hospital the last time I was advised that since he was not family FMLA would not apply, he was intubated and sedated and I needed to be present to make medical decisions, I forwarded all hospital documentation the POA as well as the form stating he was incapacitated was advised if I resigned my position that I would be able to re-apply and they’d be happy to take me back. I had been working there for almost 5 years and really didn’t want to leave the job but felt the obligation to not let my friend die alone and as his POA had to be there, and the hospital was 5 hours from my place of employment. Reluctantly I resigned and in the email reiterated what they had said that I’d be rehired after he passed or recovered, he passed 3 days later and now they refuse to rehire me, and stated I resigned so they don’t have to pay unemployment. Can they falsely represent they will rehire me just to get me to resign the position so they don’t have to pay unemployment? If I could get an answer it’d be appreciated, I’m thinking of filing and then appealing any denial.

  41. I live in Michigan. I want to press charges on an employer for discrimination. I am a man that tried to apply for a secretary’s job. Never got a app, nothing after 7 tries. What are my rights. Is it against the law. Can they be arrested. I want all that. No one should have to put up with what I went through. NEVER!!!!!! Like I was a piece of crap who cannot do anything, including a secretary. All they would have had to do is give me an app. And turn me down. They could not even do that. Please help me.

    • Hi my unemployment has stop because of and answer I answered wrong I’d there anyone can help me start back up my unemployment I’m waiting on a jurisdiction for ,5 months now and still nothing

      • We understand your situation. There will be a delay considering the pendency. Please continue following up regularly.

  42. I need someone to contact me so I change my phone number the verification is through my old number . I’m unable to go online and post job search.

  43. I don’t appreciate anyone ever answering the phones at the unemployment office. I was on unemployment in 2013. I now apparently owe the IRS $1,500 because you did not take taxes out of my unemployment. I am seriously aggravated with this situation. I’ve left messages, emails. I’m over it.

    • How do I talk to a live person at unemployment office. It’s a 45 min. Drive to the nearest official and I have questions

    • Markie,

I can understand your situation. Please note this is a private website and we do not have any links with the Unemployment Office. Since this situation seems to be getting out of hand, I suggest you consider the option of visiting an Office in the vicinity.

      • All offices are closed to the public, appointment only. No one is answering any numbers, I’ve tried 4. Their website isn’t working, not even a help section. My daughter just got an email from work, schools closed 2 more weeks. We’re all frustrated, to say the least. We are staying home, 3 adults 1 toddler, not panicking or hoarding. Everything non essential is closed, we get that, we’ll live. When we do need to go out to buy essential, what money does she use?! Oh by the way her food stamp just got canceled, 3 days after she went to MDHHS to tell them she’s temporarily laid off. Seems to me a HUGE right hand left hand issue, not just Michigan either.
        HELP

        • You guys have me locked out of my account. You sent me money according to marvin Tuesday, Its now Thursday and it still isnt in there. • Jeannine,

We understand this might be a difficult time for you. We’re anticipating a shortage of staff across unemployment offices due to the massive surge in UI applications considering the pandemic. We advise against calling or visiting the office, as you may not get a response instantly.

        • Tyreese,

Please reach out to the Unemployment Office for clarification and decide if you want to apply accordingly.

  44. Pushed no button on accident for week I am claiming.. How do i rectify this? Because I did this I will not be paid.

    • Roger,

If you don’t claim within the stipulated time, you’ll not get paid. Please call the Claims Center for clarification.

  45. I’ve called the number repeatedly, spent 30-45 min on phone only to be disconnected. Tried applying online but social and birthdate don’t match their records. Going on 3 weeks. Is the only open office in Lansing? An hour drive?

    • I’ve been trying to get this unemployment done for weeks now, but every time I call it hangs up on me. All I need to do is talk to someone to check my claim and to get a new password. This is getting frustrating now. No matter what time I have called I get issues…I just need help!!! Please!!!

  46. I need to get a verification pin to file, in order to do so I must call the 866-500-0017 phone number, but for the past six (yes, 6) days consecutive, no matter what time of day I call, (I began at 9am on the dot today) I am told that “due to high call volume my call cannot be taken at this time, please refer to the internet to file my claim.” So, I am caught in this catch 22 of not being able to file by internet or phone….
    My questions are:
1.) Is anyone actually working to take my call with the government shutdown?
2.) If I go to the problem resolution center, is anyone working with the government shutdown?
3.) Has anyone else had this issue, if so, please advise on how you resolved the problem!

    Thank you!!
