North Carolina Unemployment Benefits Guide


This guide explains how to apply for unemployment in North Carolina. Follow step by step instructions that will help you claim benefits through NC state unemployment office.

First and foremost, apply as soon as you lose the job. State unemployment offices generally take 1-3 weeks to process your application, especially for the initial claim. The compensation will be paid from the week you applied and if you delay, you will lose the benefits prior to the week of filing. North Carolina Unemployment Compensation Eligibility Requirements

  • Your name, address, social security number and other personal details such as telephone number, email address etc.
  • Dependents name, date of birth and their social security number.
  • Details of your previous employer. For each employer, you need to provide

  • If you had out-of-state employment in the past 18 months, you also need to provide the employment details.
  • Reason you lost the job – it has to be involuntary to be eligible to receive benefits.

Claimants must notify the Employment Security Commission of any job offers they have received, and if there have been changes in any retirement pension. My current management position is being eliminated and I have to reapply for a new management postion against the general population. If I’m not offered a new management position can I apply for unemployment benefits? (even if I am offered a part time position?) My pay would probably be significantly reduced given that scenario. Also, what must be considered is that I currently have a part time job elsewhere (about 20 hours weekly along with my full time management job. So, would I be eligible for unemployment if I refuse a part time position at the place that is currently my full time job?
