UI: Unemployment Insurance (UI) programs offer the basic unemployment benefits to eligible workers who become jobless through no fault of their own, and meet specific other eligibility requirements.

  • Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)
  • Extended Benefits (EB)

Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)

Important Note: EUC benefits remain expired as of December 28,2013 awaiting an extension that is being debated to be approved by the Congress. These are not available currently. We suggest that you keep a track of national news in this regard for updates.

Unemployment benefits extensionA Tier of unemployment is an addition of a certain amount of weeks of unemployment benefits. There are presently four Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits extensions available. Each Tier provides additional weeks of unemployment other than the basic state unemployment benefits.

  • EUC Tier 1 offer up to 20 weeks or 80% of an individual’s maximum benefit amount from their original unemployment insurance claim, whichever amount is less.
  • EUC Tier 2 gives up to 14 weeks of 54% of an individual’s highest benefit amount from their original unemployment insurance claim, whichever amount is less. An individual must tire out EUC Tier 1 benefits so as to obtain EUC Tier 2 benefits.
  • EUC Tier 3 provide up to 13 weeks or 50% of an individual’s maximum benefit amount from their actual unemployment insurance claim, whichever amount is less. An individual must run out EUC Tier 2 benefits in order to receive EUC Tier 3 benefits.
  • EUC Tier 4 offer up to 6 weeks or 24% of an individual’s maximum benefit from their original UI claim, whichever amount is less. An individual must exhaust their EUC Tier 3 claim by benefit.

Extended Benefits (EB)

Extended Benefits are obtainable to workers who have tired usual unemployment insurance benefits all through periods of high unemployment. The basic Extended Benefits program offers up to 13 extra weeks of benefits when a State is undergoing high unemployment.

EB is activated only during high unemployment period in the State.

How to File for Unemployment Benefits Extension

  1. Check your state’s unemployment extension qualification criteria. The rules for unemployment and unemployment extension are dissimilar in each state. Start exploring the unemployment extension eligibility criteria particular to your state. There are often two different unemployment extensions, one in state funded while the other funded by the government.
  2. Gather all personal information necessary; and reapply. Collect all of your information you needed upon primarily filing unemployment; your work histories, your reason of unemployment, and your social security number. In order to obtain an unemployment extension, go to your state’s unemployment website, or call the employment security department. Apply for your unemployment extension.
  3. Wait for the mail; the paperwork comes in the mail and your checks must keep coming. Once you have applied for your unemployment benefits, wait for the paperwork and the payments that will follow. Bear in mind that you can be inspected on your job search at any time; keep through job search records with reliable contacts to confirm receiving your application.

In Utah, there are recent documents posted stating “As in effect on November 1st, 2015” concerning eligibility of extended benefits.

        I’ve provided the link: http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r994/r994-402.htm#T2

If no extensions are available then why these documents from a .gov site are stating otherwise?

        • Martin says:

Thank you for sharing the link.

Extended Benefits are state specific and only activated under extreme unemployment situations.

We generally refer to the EUC(Emergency Unemployment Compensation), which provided the required extension until it expired in 2014. If Utah is providing EB, you can consider applying for it.

      • Rick says:

A federal gvt that spends trillions every year on the military, yet, the damn congress cant approve extended benefits for those having a hard time finding jobs in fields that are saturated or seasonal. Political crap. And they wonder why poverty is high.. they dont want to help.

        • rick's an ass says:

yes rick, great point. lets take money away from our military so you can continue being lazy and getting free cash.

        • Cathy says:

There are two sides to every coin. First, the military gets as much as they do because most of it is run with civilian contracts that can last 10 years or more, not because the soldiers get any benefits or supplies. My son was army for nearly 9 years, and this is fact. Second, Rick isn’t necessarily lazy – my daughter has worked as a temp for 2 years because the companies around here don’t want to hire permanent and be forced to pay her benefits.

  9. Linda says:

I understand there’s no extensions but you also say if it’s about 6% that there would be extension well Oregon is above at 6.3% is what I’m hearing why isn’t there extension is that another lie

    • Martin says:

Why don’t you call the labor authorities in your state to validate this?

    • Rick says:

They cant fund an extension because too much of our money is paid to the military to sit on their asses at bases all over the world playing world bully. 1/3rd of our annual budget goes to the military. It is absolutely absurd. If they would cut 1/3rd of the military budget, they could fund free healthcare in this country… but we are more interested in being the worlds police department and bully that we waste all of our money doing so.

      Hi Matt,

Since you are already receiving EUC amount, I am afraid there is no further extension available in Nevada now.

I have already file for and use up my Emergency Unemployment Compensation but have not been able to find a job yet can i file for a exstendstion on it. The state I live in is Sc.

I went there and I filled out an application and I have been told that I will get a call from someone. that was since March, but no one called. whenever I go there I get the same answer.
As if they do not work and only collect their paychecks, since they keep their jobs.
if you know who is the higher authority to go to, please send me a link or a phone No. I definitely will file a claim against them.

  45. Susan says:

I collected unemployment benefits, and I have been told that they are exhausted in March 22′ 2013. That was tier four. I asked about the EB, I have been told I took all.
So, where is the relief to the unemployed people who can not find a job. I am looking for a job in the US and Internationally. I would go anywhere just to save my family.
    Advices are welcomed!

    • Baggie says:

      Hi Susan,

It is unfortunate that you are unable to land a job. You seem to have received maximum benefits from the unemployment office. Extended benefits (EB) will not be available unless the unemployment rate of the state is abnormally high.

You can go ahead and receive some job training or take up courses which will put you in the field which has short supply of man power. Hope this helps.

  46. Barbara says:

I got my last UE check for the period ending 12/31/11.

My unemployment runs out on 08//11/12! and I still have not found a job (I look for work diligently). I need to file for an extension, according to my research I can apply for both State and Federal Unemployment assistance according to the current unemployment rate of 6% or higher. I would like to get the ball rolling now – before my current benefits expire. My creditors will me very upset if I’m unable to pay them on time. I don’t know how to get these forms nor how to complete them or where to send them.
I need help. Who do I contact?
    Thanks for your time.
