Georgia Unemployment Benefits
The state of Georgia, in association with the Federal government, provides Unemployment Insurance (UI) to those who have lost their employment due to reasons not concerning their conduct or performance.
Know more about the requirements to claim for benefits, various ways to apply, contact details, and other important details that are necessary to file for Unemployment Insurance in Georgia.
Eligibility To Apply For UI Benefits In Georgia
The state of Georgia has set various criteria to be deemed eligible for unemployment benefits. The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) will oversee that the set criteria are met by the applicants. The requirements include – monetary eligibility, job separation, and maintenance of eligibility during the benefit period.
Monetary Eligibility
The state law in Georgia requires the applicants to meet the set monetary requirements to gain eligibility for monetary benefits. The monetary requirements consist of receiving ‘insured wages’, and the total wages received during the ‘base period’.
Insured wages are wages paid by the employer who pays Georgia Unemployment Insurance tax, and it is necessary for you to show that your wages are indeed insured wages to qualify for benefits.
In the state of Georgia, the first four of the last five calendar quarters completed at the time when you file the unemployment claim is considered as the regular base period. For those whose wages do not qualify for the regular base period, may consider the alternative base period. The alternative base period in Georgia is the last four calendar quarters completed at the time of filing the claim.
To meet the monetary requirements, applicants must possess the following qualifications:
- You must have insured wages in at least two-quarters of the base period
- Your wages must be equal to or more than $1,134 in the two-quarters of the base period in which you have the highest wages
- The total wages in the base period must be equal to at least one and one-half times of the wages received in the quarter in which you earned the highest wages
Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA): The regular method of calculating the WBA in Georgia is done by dividing the total amount of money earned in the two highest paid quarters by 42.
If you fail to qualify for benefits as your total wages is not equal to one and one-half times the wages received in the highest earning quarter, an alternative calculation can be used. The alternative calculations are made by dividing the total amount of money paid in the highest earning quarter by 21.
The minimum weekly benefit amount provided in Georgia is $44, and the maximum benefit amount is capped at $330. The maximum benefit period is determined by the rate of unemployment in Georgia. The chart below shows the number of weeks you may receive the benefits depending on the unemployment rate in Georgia:
Determination of the Maximum Benefit Period | |
Unemployment Rate Adjusted seasonally | Maximum Number of Weeks |
Less than or equal to 6.5% | 14 |
Greater than 6.5%, up to 7.00% | 15 |
Greater than 7.00%, up to 7.5% | 16 |
Greater than 7.5%, up to 8.00% | 17 |
Greater than 8.00%, up to 8.5% | 18 |
Greater than 8.5%, up to 9.00% | 19 |
9.00% and above | 20 |

Job Separation
The reason for your separation from your previous organization/employer is one of the crucial criteria which can affect your claim for benefits. You must have not lost your job due to any fault of your own. To gain eligibility for benefits, you must meet the below eligibility requirements:
- Lost the job due to no fault of theirs whatsoever
- Have earned wages at least 10 times the weekly benefit amount of your claim
- You were laid off due to lack of work, or your employer has reduced your working hours due to lack of work
- You were not involved in any criminal activities in your previous organization leading to your job separation
- You were not fired for reasons that come under the definition of misconduct
GDOL will contact your previous employer to obtain information on your job separation and will verify the reasons presented by you. The department may deem you ineligible if the reason given by you for job-separation is not the same as the reasons given by your previous employer.
Eligibility requirements – overview
Maintaining Eligibility
Once you prove your monetary eligibility and justify your reasons for separating from the previous organization, you would be eligible for monetary benefits. This, however, doesn’t mean that you would receive benefits throughout the benefit period.
You must maintain eligibility throughout the benefit period to continue to receive benefits. To remain eligible, you must follow these points:
- You must be able and available to work
- You must provide proof that you are looking for work on a weekly basis
- You are expected to seek and accept any suitable job offer made to you
- As the length of your unemployment increases, you will be expected to make adjustments in your wage expectations, working conditions, job description, prior training and/or experience
- When GDOL refers you for a job, you must apply for the same
Failing to carry out any of the above points would result in discontinuation of the payment of benefit amount.
If you were offered a job but refuse to accept the offer, you are expected to immediately report it to GDOL. The department will then determine if the reason to refuse the job is acceptable or not. You may only refuse to work under a few scenarios, such as:
- The position opened up due to an ongoing strike
- The job paid less than the prescribed minimum wage
- The wage was substantially less than the prevailing wages paid for similar work in the neighborhood
You must also remember the following points to meet the work availability and work search requirements:
- You must register to employment services unless you are exempt by law
- If you are a citizen of Georgia, you must register with GDOL
- You must make at least 3 job contacts in a given week
- Be physically able to perform work (even if it’s not your regular field of work)
- If you are filing an interstate claim, register with the local state workforce, but you must follow the rules and regulations of Georgia regarding your availability for work and work search requirements
-
You must meet other eligibility criteria, including the availability for work and work search requirements each week. GDOL may randomly conduct an audit, in which if it’s found that you do not meet any particular criteria, your benefits will be stopped.

Things To Know After Filing An Application
Your responsibility does not end with the filing of the claim. There are many important aspects that you should know to make sure that they are on the right track, and also should be informed about any probable issues that might pop up.
Overpayment And Fraud
If it is found that you were paid benefits that were not supposed to be received by you, it would be considered as an overpayment. If the event you receive an overpayment, you must immediately bring it to the notice of GDOL. You will be expected to pay back the excess amount received, along with any income taxes that were withheld.
GDOL identifies two types of overpayments, they are:
- Non-fraud overpayment
- Fraud overpayment
Non-fraud Overpayment
An overpayment that is the amount you received without the intention of obtaining benefits that you were not entitled to, is identified as a non-fraud overpayment.
You are expected to pay back the overpayment, along with the other civil penalties, court costs, and filing fees as applicable. You can, however, request for a waiver from paying the excess amount if you did not intentionally receive the overpayment. GDOL will consider the following points to decide if the waiver must be given or not:
- The intention with you received the excessive amount
- Your financial condition after paying the overpayment, and the possible hardships you may face to make the payment
- Your prospect of getting employment to repay the overpayment
The decision taken by GDOL will be final and appeal on the decision of waiver cannot be appealed.
Also, make sure that you apply for a waiver within 15 days of the release date of the overpayment notice.
Fraud Overpayment
If you have knowingly received excessive payments that were not intended to be paid to you, it will be considered as fraud overpayment. The GDOl will declare it a fraud overpayment, if:
- You knowingly make false statements to fraudulently gain eligibility for benefits
- You knowingly failed to disclose important information or facts that are essential
- You misrepresent facts intentionally to obtain or increase the benefit amount
GDOL considers that fraud is committed when you knowingly distorts or conceals facts with the purpose of obtaining or increasing the benefit amount. If you are found to have committed fraud, you will be subject to the following penalties:
- You must pay entire overpaid amount
- A penalty of 15 % of the total amount must be paid
- You should pay interest of 1% of the unpaid balance every month
- You will not be allowed to collect unemployment benefits for the rest of the calendar quarter, and a year after the quarter
- You may also be subject to civil or criminal penalties
Repayment Of Overpayments
You may voluntarily repay the dues with a lump sum payment or in the form of planned installments. If you fail to voluntarily pay the excessive amount, GDOL may take one of the following decisions:
- Deducting 50% of the future benefit payments, and applying it for the overpayment
- The state may also seek legal action, including criminal prosecution
Benefits Extension
Georgia offers benefits extension only when the state’s unemployment rate is too high. To know more about the benefits extension, visit GDOL.

i applied back on 01/2021 and i recently received a benefit determination letter on 11/21 it don’t say if i was approved or denied but it does give me the amounts i should be receiving. does this mean i’m approved. i keep checking my online portal and it says pending i’m confused. i keep trying to get in contact with gdol and no luck i have sent several email and no response. what should i do?
Joshua,
That pretty much means your claim has been approved. Please check the website and see if the option to file a weekly claim is available for you.
I filed an appeal in August 2020 regarding the GDOL stopping my pmts for several weeks for severance pay I received prior to applying for UI. I filed the appeal within 15 days online. I received a confirmation number and never received ONE WORD regarding a hearing, a determination or any other communication. I sent them at least 6-8 emails with the previous emails included each time and never got one response. Two times I copied the higher up tribunal appeals people in my emails and both times they actually responded saying that was not their issue but to continue waiting because the first appeals process people were incredibly busy I did not file for unemployment until after the three weeks of severance was over so there was no reason for them to take those pmts from me 4 months after my unemployment began. Even if I’m not correct in that assumption (even though I believe I am!) I am still legally allowed a hearing. My unemployment ended in September 2021 and I still a whole year later have not be een contacted ever. My question is even though my claim is now closed can I do anything further. ( I STILL HAVE THE EMAILS AND RESPONSES FROM THE HIGHER UP TRIBUNE BTW) i’m not trying to get money I’m not owed I’m trying to get money that my employer paid insurance for that I should’ve been covered with.
Misty,
The best way to get to the bottom of this is to chase your adjudicator regularly. The delay might be attributed to the high pendency of cases.
Do I need a separation document from my previous employer to file a claim or will the GDOL contact my employer for informat
Kristen,
The required paperwork/checklist will be made available to you at the time of filing the claim.
I received a Georgia claims determination letter that started benefits are allowed as of 07/04/21. The letter didn’t indicate how much I will be receiving. When I check my UI claim on line, nothing has changed and I haven’t received any new benefits.
Sharon,
Please check for relevant paperwork after a couple of days. They should update the payment info.

I applied for assistance in May of last year and was approved for PUA. My debit card arrived in the mail a week and a half after I applied. I got back pay and received payments for 3 months and then they cut me off because I didn’t turn in my paperwork. I thought since I was approved I didn’t need to. So I reapplied in September and I didn’t hear anything back from them so I reapplied again in January and still nothing. I too have made every attempt to reach someone at the “career center” in my hometown but to no avail. I have even written the Commissioner and I got a response that my email would be forwarded to the Unemployment Department and it would be taken care of. Well that was about a month ago. I’m facing jail time now because I wasn’t able to work and pay my child support and my unemployment was cut off.
Started claiming benefits on June 06,2021 and been verified, received my benefits letter, and now says pending determination will be contacted by GDOL rep? I’m working on 7 weeks this week, Also got a confirmation number when processed, what do I do now
how to I get in touch with GDOL rep?
Stephen,
Please consider the option of visiting an office in the vicinity if safe and feasible (you might be required to book an appointment prior on the website).
Where can I book an appointment at, because I have been employed ally life never had to deal with this
Stephen,
Please check for more info here – https://dol.georgia.gov/individuals/unemployment-benefits
Are any Georgia dept of labor career centers actually open? Centers in Dekalb and Gwinnett say temporarily
closed on Google maps. My claim has been pending determination for almost two months and unclear why. I received a request for employment status check, which I did, but that alert is still appearing on my dashboard so unclear
if/when a determination will be made.
Josh,
I suggest you give them a call for appointments/availibilty.

Hello, In my UI account under “Claim Information” it indicates NO for Employ Georgia Registration. Does this mean I do not have to register based on what is says for Work Search Exemption (indicates YES) or does this mean I have not registered for Employ Georgia yet?
thank you
Rob,
Please call the Unemployment Office for clarification.
I received a notice today for additional weeks being added to my pua claim. My benefit year in dates was at the end of May. Do you think i will receive additional weeks?
Dee,
If its a written confirmation, you might receive.
Been on PUA and eligible for up to 70+ weeks – this week it ends. I was denied regular unemployment but still eligible for PUA. I am eligible to work part time with former company do I still file weekly with PUA or resubmit another claim for regular UI?
Dee,
If your PUA is exhausted, please claim regular UI benefits.
What’s the best number to speak with a live person?
Onekkia,
Please try finding answers online since there might be limited phone support due to the shortage of staffing. You can use the “Resources” or “FAQs” section of the website.
I am so long here I lost my job due to illness that was not covid related I received two letters one saying I was eligible to get unemployment then another saying I wasnt . I don’t understand how they except me to live if I’m unable to work does all those years of my working mean nothing there was money taken out for situations such as these yes?
Winter,
I can understand the situation. Have you tried contacting the office to see what’s happening?
I expected a payment today. On the UI and PUA it seems to be paid but on my account it never received. This never happens. Where can I get help for this problem?
Thank you
Klaus,
I hope you got your payment. It may be a temp glitch.
Had to reapply back in March.. Pending eligibility for 13 weeks. Whats really going on?.
Janeica,
There will be a delay considering the number of applications that are being processed. Please continue chasing the office/check your status online at regular intervals until payments normalize.
I have attempted to call, sent emails, letters and smoke signals to the Georgia Department of Labor for over 12 weeks now. I have not had a return phone call yet. (762) 207-3001.
Eddie,
Please consider the option of visiting an office in the vicinity if safe and feasible.
I have reapplied. ID.me verified. Received determination letter. No benefits in 8 weeks. Have called and emailed local DOL several times. No answer, no call back or reply. Am I missing something?
Jeanette,
Nothing really. Just that the Unemployment Office is overburdened with claims. Please be patient and follow up regularly.
I reapplied for benifits. When will i get a determination letter
Amanda,
It might take more than expected due to the pendency. Please wait for 7-10 business days before starting the follow up.
I reapplied after my benefit year was up, I am still receiving benefits but my redetermination letters do not have current dates on them and the one that does states 0$ for 0 weeks. Its been a while since my BYE was up, 4/21/21 and I made money in the quarters they referenced for benefit purposes. is there a reason its stating this?
Brandy,
There seems to be an issue with your claim. Please try calling the Unemployment Office for clairfication.
Hey there well my bye date came and benefits stopped i reapplied over a month ago and received a monatary redetermanation letter thatvsaid i was approved for additional weeks from whatbi could understand but when i check it still says processing for 48bhours for over a month and i have kept claiming but havent received anything and i never received email whether i was eligible or not
Anthony,
This might take some time since there are thousands of pending applications. Please continue to follow up regularly.
