Maryland Unemployment Job Search Requirements

Active Work Search

If you receive unemployment benefits, you must be keenly looking for work the entire time. The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations (DLLR) needs that you do a legal work search for employment that you could perform and that you accept any reasonable offer of work.

Keep accurate records of your job search, including the contact, the date and the job description. The DLLR may ask for your job search information at any time, and you should present it to continue collecting benefits. If you are offered work and turn it down, you must report it when you file your claim for your next payment. The DLLR will validate the information to decide if the offer was reasonable or not. You will have to claim benefits each week you are unemployed. This is called weekly claims.

  1. Please clarify the qualification for “Exempt from Work Search” status, because it appears repeatedly in the posted directions without an explanation.

  2. It says deadline to file work searches is Friday by 5:00pm Eastern time. I just so happened to file my third contact at 5:07. Will I loose my pix benefit for the following week?

    • Alisha,

Claims filed only during the stipulated hours are processed for payment for the subsequent week. Please call the Claims Center for more info.

    • Denise,

We recommend you visit the official website of the Unemployment Office in your state and register as a job seeker. This way, you get assistance from the state.

  3. Martin, What about the new MWE REX system instituted on 20171203 and how that works with our at home records of our job searches? Are BOTH databases required to be maintained? Seems a duplication and waste of valuable job searching time to me and does the “Exempt From Work Search” fit in to all this? I can’t find any definition or explanation of criteria on what constitutes applicability. And of course you can never get through to on their phone lines, they are always busy… Grrr

This REX criteria was not present when I initially applied for UI about 1 month ago. It was only required that I keep records (using their required info which I built an Excel SS to store, theirs on the DLLR website is a broken PDF that doesn’t function properly unsurprisingly in addition to keeping those records for al least one year.

Can you shed any light on these two issues that doesn’t seem to be addressed anywhere on the DLLR site?

    Thanks!

    G
