Nevada Unemployment Benefit Questions

Nevada Unemployment Benefit Questions

Navigating the Nevada unemployment insurance program can be a daunting task. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions claimants have about the process:

How do I file a claim for unemployment benefits in Nevada?

The fastest way to apply for unemployment benefits is by using the online portal at ui.nv.gov. Claimants can opt for staff-assisted filing by calling the Nevada UI claim centers, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.

There will be wait times when using the telephone option, so the Nevada unemployment division highly recommends that claimants file their application online.

How much is unemployment in Nevada?

Currently, the highest possible weekly benefit amount for Nevada UI benefits is approximately $483, while the lowest weekly benefit amount is $16. These amounts are reviewed every July.

You can calculate your own weekly benefit amount by visiting the Nevada Unemployment Calculator.

How long does Nevada unemployment take to process?

Claimants usually receive unemployment compensation within two business days of filing their weekly claim, provided there are no eligibility issues.

When does my weekly claim start?

The start of a benefit week is at 12:01 a.m. every Sunday, and it concludes at midnight on the following Saturday. It is not possible to request payment for a week until the week has concluded.

Failure to file your claim within fourteen days may result in it being deemed untimely. This could lead to a denial of benefits for that week. If you fail to file for more than three weeks, your claim for unemployment benefits will be considered inactive.

How do I check the status of my claim in Nevada?

To check the status of your claim, you have two options. First, you can access the claimant self service portal at ui.nv.gov, and click “Claimant homepage” to see a list of all previous claims you have submitted and their status. Alternatively, you can choose option #3 and call the Nevada UI claim centers.

How do you contact Nevada unemployment?

If you have any questions about filing your unemployment insurance application or weekly claims, you will need to contact the Nevada UI Claims center that serves your local area.

If you have questions about registering at a job center, or would like more information about job searching resources, you will need to call or visit your local Nevada Job Connect office.

Can I file an unemployment claim with another state?

Under federal law, it is not possible to receive unemployment benefits from multiple states. However, if you worked in more than one state during your base period, you can ask for your out-of-state wages to be combined with your Nevada earnings to increase your weekly benefit amount.

What happens if I lie to get unemployment benefits in Nevada?

If you deliberately provide incorrect details or neglects to disclose crucial facts in order to obtain benefits, it is considered unemployment fraud and is punishable under Nevada state law. The penalties for fraud may include benefit denial, repayment of benefits along with penalty fees, and criminal prosecution.

Who pays for Nevada unemployment insurance?

The Unemployment Insurance costs in Nevada are paid entirely by employers. There is no tax deduction made from employee wages to fund the program.

Can you work part time and receive unemployment benefits?

Yes, you can work part time and file for unemployment benefits. However, you must continue to seek full-time work. You also must report any earnings in your weekly claims. These earnings will be deducted by 75% from your weekly benefit amount for each week.

You are not eligible for benefits for any week in which your earnings exceed one and a half times your weekly benefit amount.

To calculate your estimated weekly benefit amount, visit the Nevada Unemployment Calculator.

What wages do I need to report?

The term “wages” refers to the gross amount earned by an individual before any deductions are made. Any wages earned need to be reported in the week for which they were earned, rather than when they are paid.

Wages can be many different types of compensation. Examples include:

  • Commissions
  • Tips
  • Casual labor paid in cash
  • The cash value of meals (provided as a meal allowance per pay period)
  • Lodging (when provided in exchange for work)
  • Dividends paid to a corporate officer
  • Profit sharing
  • Severance pay
  • Vacation pay
  • Wages paid in lieu of notice
  • Holiday pay
  • Distributions from a 401K or other deferred plans
  • Compensation for services provided to work off a debt
  • Military active duty pay
  • Residual pay
  • Back pay awards
  • Bonus payments

Are unemployment benefits subject to taxes?

Nevada unemployment benefits are subject to federal taxes, and you can opt to have 10% of your weekly benefit amount withheld and sent to the IRS.

Nevada does not have a personal income tax, so there is no need to withhold earnings for state taxes.

Can I get unemployment if I am receiving a pension or retirement?

If you receive any pension or retirement payments, such as those from private employer plans, annuities, Keoghs, or deferred compensation, it is important to inform the Nevada unemployment claim center. Income from these sources may reduce your weekly benefit amount.

What happens if I lose my job shortly after finding reemployment?

Benefit claims are valid for one year after filing, so if you get a new job and lose it within that time frame, you will want to reopen the claim. To reopen a claim, you will need to call your local UI claim center or log into your ui.nv.gov internet claim filing system account.

  1. Hi, I was recently laid off and will receive a lump sum payment of 10 weeks of salary. When can I apply for unemployment benefits?
Do I need to wait for 10 weeks?

    • Hi, Rachel – you can go ahead and apply, but you’ll need to report the total amount of severance you received, which will affect the amount of UI benefits you can expect. You may find that your UI benefits won’t be applicable until the 10 weeks are up, but if you go ahead and apply now, you have a better chance of getting approved and having your benefits kick in right after your severance runs out.

  2. Was laid off in July. Received 10 weeks severance. I filed my initial claim right after being laid off and severance was paid in a lump sum. The system said I was ineligible for unemployment while I was receiving severance so I did not file weekly claims during that 10 week period. I started filing my weekly claims at the end of the 10 week period.
That was a month ago. I still have “Deductible Income – Pending Resolution” showing on my claim.
There is no clear info on whether I should have been filing weekly claims from day one during the ineligibility period or waiting until the end of 10 weeks.

Will I be paid from my initial weekly filing or are they going to start the 10 week clock from when I actually started the weekly filings?

    • Brian,

It all depends on the outcome of the investigation. If you filed right from “day 1”, you should be paid retrospectively (provided they approved it). I suggest you follow up regularly until you have a concrete update.

  3. My position was eliminated from my job in February and I received the equivalent of 6 months severance pay. At what point do I file for unemployment, after my last severance check or prior to? I am seeking work and hope to be employed before severance runs out, but just in case I’m not, what do I do?

    • Deidre,

Please wait until the severance payout ends. You can apply towards the end of it. If its a lumpsum, you can apply right away.

  4. Received severance pay in September, Laid off in March. Lay off turned to Permanent as of September and have been receiving unemployment since March. 5. I have done my weekly claim for the additional 13 weeks. However, this is the 4th week that I have not been paid. It says that the reason is Work Performance. What on earth does that mean? I have not worked, I search for work, and I am not going to school nor doing any kind of training. I have tried calling and emailing DETR and can not get an answer.

  6. I am an on-call employee that works 1-3 days per week. I still collect unemployment benefits. My work has asked me to work 6 days for just 1 week. I will earn more than my unemployment benefits for that 1week. Do I still qualify for benefits after that week??

  11. I am a seasonal worker and have had no problems filing for my benefits for several years. This year I have answered all the filing questions correctly but there is still a question before I file as not to have any problems. My employer gave a Christmas bonus for the first time this year and none of the dates required for the time of that or questions asked about that. It was payable after all date questions which were answered correctly. There is nothing about reporting a Christmas bonus in anywhere on the forms. I will be returning to work on 5/31/2020 and since I am seasonal, I have qualified in the past as unemployment has told me ” I do have a job” Please advise on the bonus

    • Donald,

  12. My husband worked as a remote IT tech for over 4 years. Prior to that he worked in the field doing computer repairs for the same company. The company he worked for let him go as they were downsizing. He was on unemployment for 3 weeks when he was hired for a job in the field doing computer repairs just like he did 4 years ago for the company he most recently worked for. He has been on the job now for almost 2 weeks and realizes he is not physically able to do a field job anymore. If he quits will be be able to claim unemployment again until he is able to secure a remote position or a position that allows him to stay in one location? What would he have to do in order to receive unemployment again?

    • Jane,

This is a tricky situation. Please ask your husband to contact the Unemployment Office to ascertain eligibility before making a decision on the job.

  13. I failed a drug test and lost my job. I had only been there 1 week. I knew there must be some mistake as I am required to drug test monthly for VA medication. I recently adopted a dog I am allergic to and had been using a nasal spray that caused a positive result. I offered to re-take the test, contacted the lab several times and one of the lab test Dr.s told me why I tested positive. However, she cannot attest on my behalf. It was 6 weeks ago. I didnt think I would be eligible for unemployment. At this point, am I too late?

    • Michelle,

This is a tricky situation. If you can prove it was unintentional if there’s a dispute, you can receive weekly UI payments.

  14. I am a government worker and when I tried to file on line it says I need to call but you can not get a hold of anyone ever. I have been trying for days and it always says they are busy and to call back later. 15. Hi,

I was layed off after 20 years of employment due to the company closing down the factory I worked through in Cleveland, OH and moving it to Haifa, Israel. I worked from home in Nevada at the time. I was 67 years old and determined I would retire at the time, however I find that I am having a hard time living on my social security. I was layed off December 31,2018, is there a time limit that I must file for unemployment.

      • I suffered a broken foot at work. I tried to claim workers comp but a d-29 was filed not a c-4. I opted to claim on work insurance. Now a returning employee who is married to management and I have had numerous issues with that management refuses to deal with. Gave me the ultimatum of resigning and signing a severance agreement. I want to be able to claim unemployment is this possible

        • Joy,

UI benefits are only offered to claimants who lose employment due to involuntary reasons. Please consider applying if you think it was not your fault.

  18. My husband has an immigration interview in july in another country and i have to be there. I have given my job over 3 months notice and they are telling me that they wont be able to accommodate any time off for me to go. If I quit to go to the interview would i qualify for unemployment? He isn’t sick but it is mandatory that i attend the interview for our immigration case. What can I do?

The other option is to force them to fire me by not showing up to my job and going to the interview. Will that be a better option to get unemployment rather than quitting willingly and forgoing the ability to get unemployment?

    • Alice,

Unemployment Insurance benefits are only extended to claimants who lose their employment due to involuntary reasons. Either way, you may not qualify. Please call the Unemployment Office for clarification.

  19. I have sat on hold for hours on end without anyone picking up. I even fell asleep one afternoon because I was on hold for so long. I would like to know the status on my claim since it has been over 3 weeks now since I applied and cannot get through to anyone. I did the call back option, I got a call back within 5 minutes just to wait on hold for hours again without talking to any live person. What is going on that we have to wait on hold for hours?

    • Denise,

I can understand your frustration. Please note this is a private forum and we do not have any connection with the Unemployment Office in your state. Try calling during off-peak hours or even consider visiting an office in the vicinity.

  24. Funds deposited by Unemployment should be Unemployments responsibility to get to the person…. Not lost or unusable because Unemployment opened an account without the approval or permission of that person receiving the benefit.

Millions of dollars were made unavailable on Visa / Bank (Wells Fargo) accounts. Including my account which you opened against my will and my protesting. Thursday, October 16, 2015, Unemployment put in this account monies, finally sending me the funds May 2017 with no explanation of were the monies came from.

Unemployment benefits should be paid on any time A person is unemployed period. Money was paid in for the working person to be paid out when they were not employed. This money should be paid on any time the worker was not employed or between jobs or employers. The Unemployment office has these records and should notify the worker that the funds are available and stop find ways to keep funds that were to be paid out for such situations.

Phone calls to the Unemployment office have been a nightmare for years now. This could be easily fixed yet has gone on for years. Phone services have been available for decades now to address just such problems.

The recordings on your phone system has tariffed some callers with false information. Example Joe is not nor did he ever go to prison the same is true of Marry.

You are allowed to draw unemployment even if you have gone back to work. Why miss inform or miss lead people calling in waiting as I have for hours (Monday, June 19, 2017.) (With false misleading, brow beating recordings forced on callers.) You’re recording told me not to hang up 3 hours on the phone lessening to the same propaganda is completely unreasonable and abusive on your part at best.

Why are you suggesting who to get legal advice from? Are you now attorneys and legal advisors to us?

I received a call from Unemployment (Tuesday, June 20, 2017, ) about some of these grievances. The man accused me of complaining about the system hung up.

Phone centers are an abusive mess.
Calls dropped, hang up, no call backs, even when going through the governors office.

Called the Govener’s office told you would call me never did.
Look this mess has been going on for years now. It just needs to be fixed. Remove the people in the way or who are not working to fixing it.

Get the all monies to the rightful people quit cheating the clients and looking for even more ways to take the monies that belong to them.

It is bad enough to loose job. Then have to try to find another. Dealing with you should not be an additional burden to us.

Unemployment is not helping by causing this supper mess and stress on us who worked and have these benefits coming, just to be cheated by some bulling and rules that make it hard or impossible to get paid our benefits.

  25. How long does it take to receive 1st payment? I filed 10/07/17 and have not received one payment its now 10/31/17, when I goto claims website it shows Ive been approved and case says open with weekly amount….still no payment

  26. I am currently working part time.[24 hrs.] week. if I quit am I eligible for benefits? have worked this job 17 months. worked previous job almost 27 years.

Please speak the Unemployment Office in your state.

  27. How can I collect unemployment working part-time without having to put an end date for my current employer?

    • I am unable to conclude the context. If this relates to some kind of paperwork you received from the authorities, please call the Claims Center for details.

  28. Why would unemployment stop your check than send a letter saying that a week later you have a phone interview between 8 hours to confirm a certain issue thats been on log since the begining of my application?hummmmmm.wish i could get a loan like that.

  29. Hello there, I filed for unemployment almost a month ago and had my phone interview on 1/27/17. It is now 2/1/17 and it is still pending. How much longer does the pending period last? I have not had any income for what is about to be a month.

    • Well, it should certainly not take so long unless they keep you in the loop.

Please chase the Claims Center by calling them.

  30. My first day of work with current employer began 6/20/2016 making it 7 1/2mos with the company,I am going to be laid-off come 2/13/2017. What I’m trying to figure out is, if I qualify for unemployment insurance or not. The Base Period is not covering Oct through Dec 2016 me, but did cover Jul through Sept 2016 I earned $5343.98. I did leave 1 job to work at my present job now that will be laying me off 2 weeks. I moved out here in late April 2016. Base on the information given do I qualify for unemployment insurance?

Just to find out how to get my password as I have forgotten it! The computer I had it filed on crashed. When I answered the security questions they said they were wrong when I knew that they were correct.

    • I am afraid, you have to keep trying the phone lines since this should be the only way out. Please visit the “Contact Us” section to find out alternate ways to contact.

  32. I live in Arizona, but worked in Nevada. Do I file for unemployment benefits in Nevada or Arizona? My employer was based out of Nevada and all of my checks were addressed from Nevada. Also, it seems that my employer has not paid into unemployment insurance and I was found not eligible for benefits which I appealed. How long does this process take? I call and email but everyone is being very vague and no one seems to have any answers. This was not a 1099 position, and i provided them with my w2 and all other proof that I was employed and payed taxes through employer. I have enough credit hours and have worked in Nevada for all quarters required in the blocks schedule.

    • You should be filing from the state where your employment was based. If you filed an “Appeal”, if may take some time since its a lengthy process.

Please check the official website of the Unemployment Office – https://ui.nv.gov/

  33. I am 65 years old and was fired from my job a month ago.I am receiving unemployment for 26 weeks. Can I apply for my social security now as well?

  34. I was having phone issues when my interview tech called for my over the phone interview, when I tried to call back it said they’re wait times were very high and would call me back, I never received a call back today though however. Does this mean automatic denial of Benifits? If I get a hold of someone finallywhen I try and call back tommorow will they be able to help me with this?

    • No, it does not mean that way.

The determination will be communicated to you. If you think they denied wrongfully, please consider filing an appeal.

  35. I am the soul provider of my household and I have been working with a gaming company close to 8 years and I have Earned to be placed in better location but the employer (HR and Regional manager) has been transferring me to worst and worst locations so I will lose my tip income. I have been continuing work miserably because I cannot afford to be unemployed but my Tip Income has suffered Significantly since my employer moved me from one busy location to a dead location with hardly any activity. (Since last October).
Last year, I have filed a complaint with the health department on a certain Sewage contamination that went UNATTENDED FOR DAYS at my workplace and all managers kicked me out of that store out of Retaliation and put me somewhere where I won’t make descent tips ( Which is my main source of Income) I do not work and rely on the minimum wage to pay my bills!!!
I was promised a Comparable location where I would make about the same TIP Income and they know exactly which locations are hot and which ones are NOT.
I was placed in a Not so hot and Dead location and despite my numerous requests for a transfer to a better place, they took 2 weeks of work away from me (they cancelled my work schedule for 2 weeks) and I went without pay until they’ve placed me in the Least sophisticated, worst location than the previous one!
They are messing with me and my Income so I will quit and they won’t have to pay unemployment but I am hanging in there miserably. I am now very stressed and I cannot sleep or eat well , get depressed and don’t feel good and get sick a lot due to anxiety caused by employers and work. What else can I do when they only do the opposite of what I request?
I have been filing applications all over the Internet and no luck. I am in the verge of quitting and I need your help.
Please advise, Can one receive unemployment by quitting while they receive unfair treatment and employer caused a Significant financial loss in the employees income out of Sheer Retaliation? Thank you,

    • I am sorry to hear about the ordeal you’re undergoing. Yes, you can be eligible to quit under hostile circumstances and draw Unemployment Compensation until you find a new job. Make sure to keep supporting documents handy in case of a dispute raised by your employer. If they deny initially based on your employer’s feedback, ask for an adjudicator.

Please come back to us if you have any further questions.

  36. I used to live and work in Henderson, and was fired due to downsizing of the company. I received unemployment for a few months, life threw me a curveball, and I stopped calling in. Therefore my checks stopped. It was quite some time ago. How many years back can I draw unemployment?

    • You can call the Unemployment Office in your state to check if there are benefit weeks remaining in your account and apply accordingly.

    • Depends on the reason for being put on “Unpaid Leave”.

If its involuntary due to reasons such as lack of work, you can be eligible. Please inquire further with the Unemployment Office in your state.

  37. I started an online form where I was going to ask about benefits for shortened hours and then found out that I still make more weekly than the weekly benefit. I had submitted my phone number on that online form and now I continue to get calls asking if I want to apply for Social security disability benefits. I have repeatedly asked to not be contacted again, to no avail. how can I get these calls stopped?!

    • I have a strong feeling that the contact details were provided on a private website. Otherwise, I don’t think government agencies will chase you for social security benefits.

Please try reaching out on the same phone numbers and instruct them not to call you.

  38. If I exhaust my unemployment in Oklahoma before moving back to Nevada will I still be eligible to claim in Nevada if the plans I’ve made for employment fall through when I arrive? I qualify for benefits in Nevada I’m just not sure if drawing benefits in Oklahoma negates my qualifications to file in Nevada.

    • You can only apply and receive UI benefits one time. Its not revolving in nature.

Please only apply if you have benefit weeks left in your claims account with OK.

  39. In February 2015 I was discharged at my previous employer’s convenience and DETR said I was eligible for 26 weeks of benefits, of which I collected 22 weeks before starting a new job. I was discharged from the new job after 2 weeks without any cause or reason, but did not reactivate my claim after termination because I became an Independent Contractor and was making money self-employed. I was just notified that this independent contract will cease at the end of this year. Once I am no longer self-employed, am I able to reactivate my original claim and collect the remaining 4 weeks of benefits?

  40. Hi. My claim is denied till I work 14 weeks but the reason given by my employer was attendance. I proved this to be untrue. They charred me an incident in error. I have since procured a letter from them stating they would not contest my claim but can’t get ANYONE to listen to me. I’ve called, faxed proof, etc and they will not acknowledge me. I keep filing weekly claims, they keep blowing me off. I’m 6 weeks without anything coming in. I’m about to be in the street and I was at my job 12 years. What do I need to do?????

    • Please look up for the adjudication process to escalate. It is a fact finding mission that helps in settling the claim.

You may also wanna consider visiting the nearest office for assistance.

      • Hi Martin,
Thanks for your reply. I will look for the adjudication process. I have been hitting my head on the wall so to speak. Job Connect tells me there is no actual office in NV so I’m hoping the process can help me.
        Thanks again.

        • My pleasure Susan. Please let us know how it goes and do come back if you have any further questions.

          Best Wishes!

  41. I was recruited by the city of Las Vegas Parking Enforcement for a supervisory position. After 5 months they decided I was not the right “fit” and did not want me for that position. They offered me an enforcement officers position at an $8 dollar per hour reduction in pay and it would be a graveyard shift. I have an 11 year old daughter from my divorce who lives with me. The mother recently moved to Virginia with her husband, I have no relatives or friends who can help with babysitting a graveyard shift. In addition, I was off work on workman’s comp from Sept, 2014 through April 2015 for a staff infection from knee surgery that resulted in a full knee replacement in March 2015. Will those workman comp hours count as part of the qualifying period for unemployment?

    Thank you

  45. if i work 2 jobs (1 full-time and 1 part-time) and i am laid off from part-time job, am i able to collect unemployment from part-time job, and does it matter i am the only income in a 6 member household?

    • You will not be able to collect unemployment benefits for the loss of part time job. The full time job you’re working will be the base employment and since this is intact, you will not be able to apply.

Your household members will have no saying since the benefits are in lieu of loss of employment.

  46. To clarify my question. If I become unemployed May 1st 2014, can I wait 1 year, until May 1st 2015 and then register tocollect unemployment benefits for 26 weeks? Will waiting reduce my benefit amount?

    • The sooner you apply, its better.

There may be questions on why you waited for an year before you considered applying. The benefit amount will be affected if you delay.

  47. If I become unemployed through no fault of my own and decide not to file for unemployment benefits immediately, how long do I have before I would become ineligible to file for unemployment benefits in Nevada?
Is there a negative effect to my benefit amounts if I wait?

    • Depends on what you’re approved for. You can get up to 26 weeks of UI benefits.

Not sure what negative effect is on your mind.
