New Jersey Unemployment Phone Number

General information about unemployment insurance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When you call in between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays), you have the option of speaking to an agent.

Due to high call volume, the Division of Unemployment Insurance has reduced the days to file or reopen a claim for benefits by the last digit of your Social Security Number (SSN).

Below is the scheduled day to call depending on the last digit of your SSN:

  • Last digit of SSN is 0 – 3 call on Monday
  • Last digit of SSN is 4 – 6 call on Tuesday
  • Last digit of SSN is 7 – 9 call on Wednesday

Note: There are no restrictions on Social Security Numbers on Thursdays or Fridays.

Your claim will be dated the Sunday of the week in which you call to ensure you call during the week you want your claim to begin. Our week runs Sunday to Saturday. Call volume is heaviest on Mondays, so for faster service, call later in the week.

If your residence is serviced by one of the following One-Stop Career Centers, you will file your unemployment claim by calling the Freehold Reemployment Call Center at (732) 761-2020.

  1. My unemployment benefits were approved on Jan 13, 2019. I have submitted 3 claims and the response I have received is the claim is not payable at this time. I have been calling the Union Office at 201.601.4100 several times during the day to no avail. It is very frustrating not to receive a response, just a standard statement that the lines a full and call the next day and I keep getting the same response the following day.   2. Hey so I filed a claim December 30th. I have received two letters since then both of them with my base pay base year information on. One of them says I didn’t work enough weeks as it had me listed at a total of 13 with the quarter ending September 30th. My base year runs until the end of December and between September and December I worked ten weeks. Why is that not included in this statement as it has nothing listed for the last quarter?
    Online I am scheduled for a monetary phone interview in February. Is this so they can tell me if I am qualified? Will I be able to get the weeks I have been waiting for a decision paid to me? I have not called weekly to file a claim or anything because I have received no communication yet. Help guide me or answer please

      The best approach to determining what you’ll be getting is by calling the Claims Center. Make sure to be in contact with the office until claims normalize.

  3. I have been trying to claim my unemployment benefits from late December 2018. It has been almost a month now. I call every day, a couple times a day. Every time the system says that there is no one to take the call and to call back on the next business day, then hangs up on me. The state cannot lock people out of the system and give no other means to contact them when money is owed.
    How is this legal and acceptable?? And more importantly, how can I resolve this?

      I can understand your frustration. The best possible way to connect is to consider the option of visiting an office in the vicinity. You can also check the status/communicate on the official website by logging in.

    2. I filed a claim on January 2nd for one of my part-time jobs, where I have been working since May 2018 and got let go due to lack of work. I received a document on Monday (1/21) saying the claim was invalid because I did not work enough weeks in the base year beginning June 2017 (I was not working in 2017 due to personal/medical reasons). Then yesterday I found out that my two other part-time jobs were sent unemployment paperwork saying I was separated from them, even though I listed them under “currently employed.” Isn’t this a breach of confidentiality? And can I appeal the earlier decision? I can’t get through on any of the call lines due to high volume, please help!

        I don’t think its a breach of confidentiality. If you think you wrongfully denied, please consider filing an appeal. You’ll find the procedure details on the official website of the Unemployment Office.

  4. I have been trying to call the station in Freehold but the telephones are no longer receiving calls from high volume at 12 in the afternoon. Filed Dec 16th and have not seen a payment since. Whenever I go to file (I did one time on January 2nd as instructed) it says filing for claims for the first claim I made, not the current week needed. I have a confirmation code from the first week I filed but I don’t see my problem being fixed when I cannot get in contact with anyone at all.

  5. I have been trying to file for unemployment for a week now online. I made a account. Every time I try to log on it says Unfortunately, we are unable to create your account at this time.
    If you still need assistance, please contact NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development. I already made a account but its says I didn’t. So when I try to make a new it one the same thing happens.

    1. I had been collecting unemployment benefits, I worked one day as a substitute teacher and now when I try to claim benefits, I am locked out. I sent information via fax 609-813-3993 stating that I worked one day. I am actively seeking work, have not refused work. I did not receive a payment for week ending Dec. 29 Jan. 7; nor Jan. 12. I worked on Dec. 19 only since opening my claim.

I need to get in touch with someone from the freehold unemployment call center to REOPEN my claim and I have been trying every single day for every single hour on the hour that you are open and have not been able to get through.   7. Starting filing my weekly benefits back in November, finally received my benefits after 4 weeks of waiting. I’m now working part time and was told I can still claim but they would need to adjust my benefit amounts…well it’s been 3cweeks today that I’ve been trying to speak to a live person. Every day I call I get the message of call back tomorrow due to heavy call volume.

I had a monetary interview on 12/28, about 10 minutes into it the lady said she had to file some paperwork to request an alternate base year due to some of my employment being out of state in the time frame. Said she would call me back, it’s now 10 days later and I still have not heard anything. I Try calling the call center every day and it’s never taking calls. Any idea what else I can do?

  9. Hi I’m Kristin. I never did unemployment before. I sendlt all my information claimed every week did not recieve any money yet. To then find out I was denied. Does this go by 20 or 21 check in the year 2018. They use the last checks even 18 months back. I’m not sure why I would have been denied. And I have been calling for a week during all hours back to back to only get the high volume. I even went to the building to call from their phone and I still got the high volume call. I dont even know what to do next.

  10. I won my appeal . Claimed my benefits and was told today my back pay was tooking out my account and check sent direct deposit today. When will I get my funds? Wednesday or thursday? I claim every sunday.

  13. I just signed up for unemployment benefits today. I received confirmation and a confirmation number but on the final page of confirmation it says “Issues – Misconduct” then says I have an appointment on 9/14/18 at 1pm by phone but does not provide a phone number to call. I have called every number I could find and an automated message said there were too many callers and I would have to call back tomorrow. Any insight into this would be helpful.

  14. I call in every Sunday to certify for my weekly benefits and I receive my direct deposit two days later, but this week i didn’t receive anything. I checked and the email says my claim is not eligible for benefits and I do not know why. I haven’t had any problems since I started receiving my benefits a few weeks ago. I have been trying to call but I cannot reach anyone. Is there somewhere on the website that will tell me what the problem is with my claim this week, and how I can fix it?

No please don’t ask me to call them been trying for few days but I’m trying to file a claim online and I get to the part title personal information but it’s asking me what’s my main occupation? Give description but clearly I’m unemployed right now but there is no option for that after I search it . I don’t want to click on anything because then Its false info . I really just need this to prove to them I’m not working as right now I was told to file unemployment for the proof.

  18. I either did not receive by postal mail or misplaced my 2017 1099G.

    I followed the instructions here to create a new account. When I login and click Print 1099G, I’m taken to a page titled 1099-G Income Tax Statement Available Online. NOWHERE on this page does it have a link to my 1099G.

    I’ve called and was told to go online and send an email. I went back online but can find no email address.

    I called again and was told go online and email. I explained that there is no place I could find to send an email. I was told the Dept. does not have email address to give out over the phone and that I musty go online to find it.

    I’ve since called numerous times over the past month and can never get through.

    Can anyone please help me get my 1099G?

    Regarding the license request. Just leave the info blank. Do not fill in anything leave it on None. It will let you file. I had the same problem because I live out of State so my License doesn’t match the NJ License number type. I was able to file for UI by just leaving it on NONE.

  20. I have tried to open a new claim online. I can not get any further than the “General Information” page because because the website keeps telling me to format my driver license number correctly. It IS formatted correctly. I can get no further. I cannot reach anyone on the phone. I called first thing this morning and was placed in a callback queue. I was called back, I explained my issue and the agent told me to hold on for a moment. She shuffled papers for two minutes and then hung up on me. Now when I call, I get the high volume, call back tomorrow message. I would file via the phone line but it asks for a PIN number which I don’t have! This is absurd!

  22. I have been filing, and claiming hours. Last week, I did not have hours to claim as I did not work. Got an email telling me that I had to re-open my claim as I had a week with hours, followed by a week with no hours claimed, and to fill out the reopen claim and answer yes to question 1, and follow the rest of the instructions. I did this. I received no email confirmation, and more importantly, did not get my money this week. Any idea why this would happen ?

      You may not receive a call personally but automated notifications such as text messages and email. If you don’t hear from them, please chase at regular intervals by phone.

  29. Trying to claim since Dec. 17th. I called and answered all the questions, got a letter and a call date. My status is pendent? I continue to claim weekly online and by phone, and it say’s speak to a representative please hold. Then it say’s all lines are busy call back tomorrow,! only to get the same message, call back tomorrow. I was on hold for a total of 9 hours in 2 days, only to have it hang up on me after holding for hours! If I can’t get through, how do I speak to someone? I haven’t received anything in the mail since Dec. 30th! The page online say’s I am able to collect, the amount weekly and total amount I’m allowed,yet, no payment has been made to me.

    I have been trying to speak to an agent for a few weeks now. Every time I call this message keeps repeating “High volume of calls…please call back later.” I am stuck and don’t know how to reach someone over the phone.

  32. I want to do my claim online but have been having trouble with new system. It is saying the passwords I am typing in don’t match no matter how many times I try. I have a capitol, number, symbol and 8 characters long. I have typed it in very slowly exactly the same and it still says they don’t match. driving me crazy.   34. Opened a new claim on 1/5/2018. Waited for instructions in mail for claiming. Nothing ! Tried filing my weekly benefits both on the phone and online to no avail. Online said I needed to file a new claim. Which I did online on 1/5/2018. Have a confirmation number.
    When I tried to file my weekly benefits by phone it saidI had to call to speak to someone. Status of my claim is pended. It’s now 1/16/2018 as I write this it’s 11:10 am and I been on hold for 3 hrs! The status on my new desktop says coming soon? I don’t know what to believe!

I’ve been calling since last week, all day everyday (8am-4:30pm) and the recording says due to high call volume there are no agents available to take my call and to call back the following day. I’m now not going to get my check Wed as I usually would and obviously I’m depending on this income right now. I don’t know what to do at this point, it’s going to devastate me if I miss this week’s check…PLEASE HELP!!!

  41. Have been claiming weekly benefits online. Tried to claim most recent weekly benefit online and got a message saying claim can’t be processed and I must call the office. I have tried to get through by phone early morning, midday, late afternoon. “High volume of calls…please call back later.” Impossible to reach an agent. What’s going on? Please help.
