How To Send a Secure Message

If you need to connect with a New York unemployment office or send documents securely, you can do so over the web. You can send a secure message, correspondence, or questionnaire by using your NY.gov account.

First, log in to your account on the labor website, Labor.NY.gov. Then, select the envelope “Messages” icon on the bar at the top of the web page. From there, you can compose a new message. You will need to choose a subject line from a drop-down menu. Be sure to select the option that best matches your reason for contacting New York unemployment.

Be specific and give as many details as possible when writing your message. You can attach documents by using the “Attach File” button. When you are finished writing your message and attaching any relevant files, click the submit button to securely send your correspondence.

  1. I am unable to view my application for U.I online. Receive a message ” You used a different NY.gov user name in the past” Strange, because i have not used any other user names upon creating the profile. Tried calling unable to speak with a rep or the I.T department in regards to gaining access.

I believe that my U.I has been exhausted because i received a message via the phone trying to certify for weekly benefits. Can i file for an extension, since i have been unable to gain employment so far. I filed for U.I on Feb 24 2023 and received a message on Sunday last 09/10/2023.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks much.

    • Hi, Elvin – unemployment benefit extensions are available only when unemployment rates are exceptionally high. At this point, unemployment rates in New York are not high enough to trigger extension of benefits. Extended benefits in New York ended in September of 2021. When it comes to your online account, keep trying to connect with someone. You’ll need to speak with someone in the New York unemployment office in order to find out what’s causing you to get the user name error message.

  2. Im try to reach with a representative from the Unemploment. But it’s always busy what can i do next? Can i go personal office? Where can i go?

    • Hi, there – it looks like your best options are continuing to reach out by phone or sending a message. Here’s what the state of New York has said about trying to reach the Department of Labor by phone: Call the Telephone Claims Center (TCC) toll-free at (888) 209-8124 during the hours of operation: Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Due to enormous volume, there may be considerable wait time. Please be patient; everyone who is entitled will get their benefits.

You can also try sending them a message. Here’s how: If you have a general Unemployment Insurance (UI) question or a claim-specific question not answered in our Frequently Asked Questions section, you may send us a secure message. Sign in with your NY.Gov ID and click on “Messages.”

It doesn’t look like they are set up to handle customer service questions in person.

  3. The system really needs to be dismantled, the computer won’t let me file cause they have my #ss number on file from pandemic,The phone service gives u the complete run around…8 weeks of shaniggans…So piss, smh!

  4. The phone line is always busy,it’s a project to get through, when u do get through they keep sending u to an automation answered phone number that does not help u at all…I can’t believe there is no supervisors ever available or the fact New York State tax payers are paying for this division of service, clearly everyone feels they are clearly stealing from the state cause they don’t do the required work…At all!!! I’ve been out of work since June 27 cause I caught Covid-19’s in the hospital and I can’t get no help,Unbelievable…So sad for New York tax payers!!!

  5. How do I get the number I effective days to 0? I stopped certifying more than a year ago but the number of effective days is still over 80. And I’ve returned to work a long time ago. Do I need to go the the office to resolve this issue? I’ve called numerous times over the phone and there has been no hekp at all.

      • Hi, I’ve been trying to get my 1099 for many months know and haven’t been able to get it on line or by phone.

        • Hi, Maria – the state of New Jersey should have mailed you a copy of your 1099, and if they have an email address on file for you, you might also check to see if they sent you an electronic copy. If you still don’t see it, New Jersey 1099-G information will also be available from the Check Claim Status tool (https://tinyurl.com/yc6p3dxd) no later than January 31. It will not be available in your unemployment dashboard.

  6. I was residing in California and had to move to NYS to live with family because California’s Unemployment Insurance system froze all CA residents benefits due to a fraudulent claim scandal. My benefits have been frozen and I am stuck on the ID.Me website to verify my identity as a legitimate claimant. Now that I am with family in NY, where do I begin to sort this mess out? I am able to see my CA claims building, however I cannot access my benefits. Please help! Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  7. I need to apply for unemployment as soon as possible.
I’ve spent the past 2 days trying to do this online and then tried by phone.
    Nothing has worked.

So now i was looking for an office in NYC to come and apply but I cannot find any locations or
    any information.

I’m not sure what to do now. I lost my job and need unemployment. Please tell me
how to reach the correct office – by phone, by email or in perosn.
    Thank you

  8. if you are denied services what is the best thing to do reapply or a fair hearing? if i reapply will i be able to get credit for my pass week i been unemployed?

    • If you’re denied and think you need a hearing, please consider filing an “Appeal” where an adjudicator will relook into the matter.

  9. I just had a conversation with the Director of Human Resources in my organization regarding my letter of intention to retire this June, 2019. Due to my entire department getting layed off as of June 30, she recommends that my retirement letter indicate June 30 as my official retirement date, rather than the date I put in the letter. One reason for her recommendation is that because my name will automatically be listed in the group of people being layed off as of June 30 (due to a grant ending as of this date) I am eligible for unemployment benefits. Is this true?

  10. I am having difficulty in applying for unemployment I cannot gey past the credit check which I have done at least 3-4 times at a cost of which I presently could not afford I need some help in order to move forward w/my application Please advise
    Thanking you in advance

  11. My position is being transferred to a location that requires me to take 2 trains climb several stairs and then walk 6 blocks to the new location. I now drive to work at my present location. I submitted a medical accommodation from my physician due to a severe chronic back condition that requires that I don’t walk long distances or climb stairs which the transfer location will require. I have been working at my current position at the present location for 9 years. The company is not moving. They just plan on transferring my position. Technically its under 50 miles but its in NYC where as now I work in Melville, NY. If they deny my medical accommodation, will I be eligible for unemployment?
