The Unemployment Insurance program is a federal-state program to provide partial wage replacement to beneficiaries while they search for a job. Eligible applicants must satisfy three primary conditions - i) no-fault job loss ii) minimum base period wages; and iii) minimum base period work duration. The specific eligibility criteria details to file for unemployment benefits are set by the respective state governments.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much can I expect to get as unemployment benefits?icon
Your weekly benefits amount is determined by your state with reference to your base period wages, i.e the money earned by you during the 12 months preceding the quarter in which you filed your claim. You can get an estimate from the Benefits Calculator on our website.
2. Am I eligible for unemployment benefits if I work part-time?icon
You may be eligible for unemployment benefits even as a part-time worker if you satisfy the criteria adjusted for part-time employees. Many states will subtract your part-time wages from the amount you would be entitled to under the regular program to arrive at your weekly benefits. You are allowed to work part-time while you search for full-time positions on unemployment assistance.
3. I stopped receiving benefits after the first week. Why did this happen?icon
Unemployment Insurance claims must be filed every week, complete with work search documents and other supporting materials. If you fail to do so, the payments will stop. Your eligibility must be certified every week.
4. Can I claim unemployment benefits while I also have social security disability payments?icon
It may be difficult to collect unemployment benefits while you get disability payments because an important qualifying criterion for UI eligibility is being able to and available for work. You may not satisfy that if you have a particularly debilitating condition. This may be decided by a judge at an appeal.
5. What to do if my claim is rejected?icon
Your claim may be rejected if you are found ineligible. If you disagree with the evaluation you can file an appeal against the denial of the unemployment claim. A hearing will then be scheduled wherein you have to present evidence supporting your assertion of eligibility. If you are still denied unemployment compensation, some states may let you appeal to a higher state unemployment agency.
